“Rose-Marie, get down here!” Derek hollered from his position on the couch. He was right in the middle of watching a football match when he had a sudden craving for alcohol. His addiction to the deadly liquid had only grown over the years, making him fully dependent on it.

“Rose!” He shouted again, growing impatient.

He heard her light footsteps as she descended from the stairway leading into the room.

“Get me a beer from the kitchen, and make it quick,” He ordered her, without removing his eyes from the television screen.

Hastily, Rose-Marie scuttled to the kitchen, not wanting to anger her foster father further. Scouring through the fridge, she found a bottle of beer, and popped it open. Making her way back to the living room, she handed him the drink.

Taking a sip from it, Derek scrunched up is face in disgust, before spewing the brown liquid all over the glass table.

"What the hell is this?!" He asked, outraged. Rose-Marie stumbled backwards, startled at his sudden outburst. Quickly, she recomposed herself, knowing how much her foster father disliked any sign of weakness.

"You asked for beer, so I got you beer," She replied smoothly.

A flicker of irritation ran through Mr. Thomas' eyes as he slowly rose from his seat.

"Don't you think I know that? Why is it cold?" He asked, stepping closer and closer in her direction, gripping the glass bottle tightly in his hand.

"That was the only bottle left, sir." She answered, trying to decipher his next move.

He raised his left hand, the one holding the bottle, and threw it at the wall behind Rose, not being able to control his sudden wave of anger.

Rose barely flinched as she heard the glass break. She was used to his outbursts by now. Unfortunately for her, her guardian was an angry drunk.

He threateningly stalked towards her, his breathing becoming hard as his rage had only escalated. With every step forward, Rose took one backward, momentarily forgetting about the mess behind her.

She barely managed to conceal her gasp as her feet came in contact with the broken glass, the spilled alcohol making her wounds burn immensely. Hissing in pain, she gave Derek a pleading glance, hoping that he’d let her be for now.

I hint of regret graced his features for a nanosecond before it was shoved to the back of his mind. She didn’t deserve sympathy. Rose had single-handedly ruined his life; had stripped him of his only joy. In his eyes, compassion should be the last thing she deserved.

“I don’t want this mess here when I get back from work. Be useful and restock the fridge, would you,” He grumbled, turning his back on her and making his way to the door, slamming it on his way out.

Clumsily, Rose-Marie stumbled towards the love seat, whimpers escaping her mouth. Squeezing her eyes shut, she plucked out each sliver of glass until she was sure they were all gone. Luckily, none went to deep into the soles of her feet. Grabbing a napkin from the table in front of her, she wiped the blood that was slowly dripping from the fresh wounds.
