03. MOVE

SEO NANA.

"only 700,000 won?!" seo nana exclaimed.

her realtor was a nice man, mr. hong, in his late '60s to early '70s, who she learned worked 52 years in real estate; a veteran in the business. he handed her a flyer that read, '2 bedroom apartment, no. 707. ₩700,000 per month, NO deposit!' for no deposit and that type of size, the apartment seemed dirt cheap to nana. the man told her that she was a lucky lady to find such a good place.

mr. hong brought her to a brick building that sat by a river. within the first step inside, nana fell in love. she thought that it was built probably before she was born, carrying such prestigious style with a taste of western flavor. the only problem was that the apartment was on the seventh floor and the building had no elevator — to which she didn't mind. she felt great that she had such a young body that could handle climbing seven flights of stairs, but she worried for mr. hong, whose hand she held the entire way up.

upstairs they reached a large window that had a view of the river. for someone like her, who grew up in the countryside of daegu, having such a scenic view was great. it made her feel at home. the two entered apartment no. 707 to see three silhouettes by the window. "excuse us," mr. hong said, causing the man in the tight suit to turn around. "you don't mind if i give my client a tour, as well, do you?"

the younger man put up his hand. "actually, yes, i do. my client here is getting ready to make an offer." the young lady beside him turned around as well, giving nana a clear view of her face. from behind she knew that the girl looked familiar, with her skinny build, short hair, and all-black clothing.

"nana?!"

seo nana rushed over to her, saying, "what a coincidence!" before being hit back with a, "sorry, but who are you?"

nana was taken aback, nearly fell to her knees in hurt. "huh? you don't remember me?" tears were getting ready to well up in her eyes until the girl before her laughed and slapped herself in the knee. "sorry, i'm kidding. are you alright, nana?"

seo nana picked herself back up and straightened herself, dusting off her clothes. baek nana's real estate agent interrupted, "so, are you taking the apartment?"

she sucked her teeth. "i don't really know . ."

"i'll take it then!"

"huh? wait, no! i was here first." baek nana crossed her arms and seo nana pouted. "but you haven't decided yet!"

"well in that case," she turned to her agent, "i'll take it."

this earned a gasp and a few whines from the other girl. "wait! but i want to live here!"

"why don't you just live with your boyfriend?" at this point, the two girls began to bicker. "i told you, he's not my boyfriend!" "whatever he is, why can't you live with him?" "i don't want to burden him! besides, it's already hard for him on his own and for him to take care of a girl like me alongside that would be so hard on him!" "why can't you just pick another place?" "what? no! please, this place is perfect for me! i don't —"

"ah, you two are so loud."

a low voice emitted from behind baek nana. it was a boy that seo nana didn't even notice being there before. he was leaned against the side of window, wearing quite a form fitting t-shirt that showed off his defined body, and his cap backwards on his head. he was . . handsome. he reminded her a lot of baek nana, with the dark demeanor and the beautiful face that was hard to approach. she thought that the two of them being so similar was why they were together.

"is that your boyfriend?" nana nodded.

"if you both want this apartment so bad, why don't you just rent it together?"

mr. hong's eyes lit up. "oh yes! that's a great idea. theres two bedrooms so the both of you can have your privacy, and the rent will be split in half!"

seo nana mumbled. "half of 700,000, so that means . ."

"only 350,000 won!" the two girls said in unison.

"but," baek nana stepped back, "you know how to respect other people's privacy, right?" the other nodded eagerly.

the younger agent leaned in to his client's ear and whispered, "are you sure you want to do this? yes, it will be cheap, but sharing an apartment can be bothersome."

nana scoffed, rolled her eyes at the man. "i disagree. but maybe it is, very much so, for a lonely man like you, mr. kang." she turned over to nana and mr. hong. "mr. hong, when will the apartment be ready?"

"well, if i arrange it right away, it should be done by tomorrow morning." the old man grinned.

"that's great. i'll start moving in my things tomorrow afternoon." she looked at nana. "what about you?"

seo nana barely even made out a "me too!" with how flustered she was.

baek nana reached out her pale hand, the right one with tons of bracelets peeking from under her leather jacket and the metal rings on her fingers. "starting tomorrow, we'll be living together, then, nana." seo nana was still as flustered, was frozen for a second to take in the moment. she stared at her hand, and a smile creeped up on her lips as she took the hand in hers and shook it.

in that moment, for some reason, i felt like i was going to cry. i don't really know how to explain it, but . . when i shook nana's hand i felt this unexpected warmth that went straight to my heart.
