"Perfect day for a mission." (M/N) chuckled. Steve, Bucky, and (M/N) were on a mission. The trio were cracking jokes on their S.H.I.E.L.D. paid flight, the friends all laughing at the stupid things they said.

The mission was simple. Get in, get info, get out.

But who knew it'd end so horribly?

"Damnit!" (M/N) cursed as a bullet narrowly missed his skull. Bucky was beside (M/N) shooting with perfect precision. Steve was still somewhere around the building, getting the last bits of data in the office.

The storage house was riddled with bullet holes but that didn't stop them from making more.

(M/N) shot two or three Hydra agents before the warehouse went quiet. Bucky set aside his weapon. (M/N) doing the same before standing.

"C'mon we gotta find Spangles." (M/N) said with a smile. Bucky nodded as they came upon a fork in the warehouses crates.

"You go left I'll go right. Whistle if you find the stairs or Steve. I'll find you. Only shoot if you're in trouble." (M/N) said, starting on his path. Bucky nodded and did as he was told.

As Bucky rounded a corner he ran into his best friend. Who jumped at the surprise.

"Geez. You scared me..." He sighed. Bucky chuckled and nodded his head towards the fork he parted with (M/N) at.

"Let's go. I gotta ask (M/N) dancing." Steve said. The little competition they'd been having over who'd ask the (h/c) guy out first was getting ridiculous.

"Not unless I ask first." Bucky laughed as they jogged forward.

As they rounded a corner a loud thunderous bang erupted from down the line of crates. This one seemed to stand out more. Even if they didn't know, it was a life changing shot.

Bucky and Steve raced towards where the sound came from, another two going off. They rounded a corner and came upon (M/N) dropping his gun as a body fell across from him.

Bucky and Steve let out a sigh of relief that was interrupted by the thud of a body.

"(M/N)!" Steve yelled rushing to the agents side. Bucky following in suit.

(M/N) clenched his side crimson painting his paling hand. Steve moved to the mans hand and steadily pressed his own to the gunshot wound. Bucky held his hand as (M/N) winced, clutching the soliders hand.

"Bucky tear some of that guys jacket." Steve instructed pointing to the Hydra agent behind them.

Bucky did so leaving the dying mans side briefly then handing the material to Steve. Holding (M/N)'s hand as Steve worked to patch up the wound.

But (M/N) was fading, the liters of blood he was loosing were taking their toll. The wounded solider could only wince and watch as he died before his best friends. Who he'd wanted to become more than friends with.

"You know... I never got to ask you boys if you wanted to go dancing with me." (M/N) mumbled. Steve shook his head.

"No, don't worry about it (M/N). We'll go. It's a date. And we'll make it." Steve assured. (M/N) smiled. Bucky watching the man he adored, fade in and out from bloodloss.

(M/N) stared at the ceiling. The bland surface still made him smile. He looked at the two Avengers beside him. Bucky held his right arm, trying to brave a stern face as Steve tried to patch up the hole in his side, all the while assuring the dying man he would escape his fate.

(M/N) chuckled. A pain radiated through his entirety. He coughed up what felt like a couple bullets, the taste of iron overcoming all of his senses.

"You know..." (M/N) trailed. His eyes struggling to stay open. Bucky looked at (M/N), his face heartbroken. As he knew there was no way to escape the scenario happening before them.

"I'll never get to go out with you two... I was real excited." He laughed. Steve shook his head.

"No. No we're gonna make it (M/N). Just hold on a few more minutes." Steve pleaded. Though they all knew this, was (M/N)'s last minute.

"Don't lie Stevie," he coughed the taste of iron was all he sensed in that moment. The pain subsidied, all he knew was the cold creeping on and the taste of iron.

"I have every right to scold a liar..." (M/N) joked. Looking at Steve, who could not do the same. Seeing the man he loved hurt, was enough, knowing he'd die was the final blow of devastation.

"(M/N) y-you can't leave us... Wh-Who's gonna keep ole' Steve and Bucky outta trouble?" Bucky stammered. (M/N)'s eyes closed and slowly reopened.

"I dunno... Maybe... Yeah..." (M/N) was slowly unraveling. His mind was just hopping from thought to thought.

"I love you. I hope you realize... that..." He said staring straight up at the fading ceiling. One last smile stretching his face, as his final breath slipped through cold lips.

"N-no..." Steve sobbed. Bucky could only stare at the corpse of the man he loved.

The world could have collapsed around them, swallowing them into oblivion, and it would've been nothing compared to the way their world died.

The way (M/N) died.
