Sweet Sixteen

Ice Cream

(Aj's outfit on side but blue shirt)

We pull into the local town's ice cream shop, Shivers, I see and  senior admiring my truck and I smile at him. He smiles back then winks and I feel my face heat up. I look at the ground and follow Jade up to his ordering window.

“What would you like?” he asks Jade but I can feel his eyes on me.

‘Why is he so familiar?’ I ask myself racking my brain for information on this kid.

“A large kitKat flurry with  vanilla ice cream. Oh and whatever she orders will go on my tab" she adds gesturing to me.

I give her a look

“Well it is your birthday.” she laughs

I roll my eyes

“Here you go.” He says handing her her ice cream while I scan the menu. I decide what I want and turn my attention to the brown haired teen in front of me.

“I’ll have a large cookie dough flurry with vanilla.” I order

    “You never change do you?’ Jade asks

    “What do you mean?” I ask confused as the kid turns to make my treat.

    “That’s all you ever get!” She exclaims.

    “Well it is my favorite!” I explain

    “Hey Jade!” Someone calls and we both turn. It’s her boyfriend Kaden.

    “Can I?”She asks

    “Bye.” I laugh

    She runs across the street to sit on a bench with him.

    “Here.” I hear from behind me

    “Oh thanks!” I say grabbing my ice cream

He flashes me a perfectly straight and white smile.

“ Happy birthday" he says and I almost melt at his voice

“Thanks.” I say giving him a smile.

“What's your name?”  He asks shyly

I look look up surprised “oh it's uh Aj" I say smiling at his shyness.

“You should do that more often it looks beautiful on you.” He says blushing

I raise an eyebrow in question.

    “Your smile.” He says quietly and I can tell his is embarrassed.

    “Hey.” I poke him in the forehead “You never told me your name.” I pout

    He laughs “It’s Trenton.”

    My eyes widen and I gasp

    “What?! What’s wrong!?” Trenton asks worriedly

    “Ummm.” I blush looking at my ice cream. How do I tell him I’ve had a crush on him since like 7th grade

I feel him put his finger under my chin and tilt my head so I look into his eyes.

“Just tell me.” He chuckles

“Well I might have had a crush on you for a while.” I blurt out and I blush

He smiles and laughs

“I’m sorry I’ll just leave.” I say grabbing my ice cream and walking towards my truck.

‘I knew I shouldn’t have told him. He just laughed in my face. Well yea what senior would like a sophomore.’ I tell myself meanily getting in my truck. I rest my forehead against the steering wheel when I hear the passenger door open.

“Good Jade we need to go.” I mumble

Why?’ She says but her voice sounds a little weird.

“Because I just embarrassed myself in front of Trenton because I told him I liked him. Why did I do that? What senior would have a crush on a sophomore? He probably thinks I’m weird now!” I rant

“He doesn’t think your weird.” She says in that weird voice

“Wait!” I exclaim and turn and lock eyes with Trenton sitting in my passenger seat

“You!” I glare and point an accusing finger in his face.

Trenton put his hands up in defense a look of pure innocence on his face

“What?” He asks

“You let me rant about this whole thing without telling me IT WAS YOU!” I exclaim jabbing my finger at the last three words

“Well you should look before you start talking to whoever gets in your truck.” He contradicts

“Fine.” I sigh placing my head in my hands.

“So you wanna talk about it?” He asks

“Not really” I say looking at him

He searches my face before nodding.

“I’m sorry.” I say looking back down

“Hey its ok. I better get going. Your friend looks like she is going to kill me.” He laughs

I follow his gaze and see Jade stomping towards the truck with a laughing Kaden being towed by his hand.

“ K bye.” I smile as I watch him get out of the truck

Jade meets him at the front of the truck. They exchange a few words before Trenton heads back towards Shivers and Jade kisses Kaden goodbye.

“Sup sweetheart.” She says getting in the truck

“Hey girlfriend. How was Kaden?” I ask starting the truck and heading for the mall
"Same ole same ole.” She tells me. “So how was Trenton?”

I blush and keep my eyes on the road knowing she is looking at me intently.

She laughs taking that for an answer and turns the radio up.

Humble and Kind by Tim McGraw comes on and we both start singing since it’s our favorite song.

“You know there’s a light that glows by the front door.” I sing swaying

“Don’t forget the keys under the mat.” Jade sings swaying to

“Childhood stars shine, always stay humble and kind.” We chorus together

“Go to church ‘cause your momma says to. Visit grandpa every chance that you can.” I sing remembering my now deceased grandfather   

“It won’t be wasted time. Always stay humble and kind.” Jade sings back.

“Hold the door, say please, say thank. Don’t steal, don’t cheat, don’t lie. I know you got mountains to climb but always stay humble and kind. When the dreams you’re dreamin’ come to you. When the work you put in is realize. Let yourself feel the pride but always stay humble and kind.” We sing together as I pull into the mall parking lot.

I shut off the truck and we hop out and make our way across the lot to the door of the mall.

“So what we doin’ here?” I asks her holding the door open and following her in.

“This is your birthday present.” She throws over her shoulder whilst she grabs my hand and pulls me towards Victoria’s Secret
