~from Kaneki's POV 2nd person~
You watched your sister walk away, her long black hair swirling around her in glossy locks. Then you looked over and saw Hide watching the same exact thing, and for some reason, you felt a little angry. "What did you say to her?" you asked, looking at him with dead serious eyes.
Hide finally looked away from (y/n) and met your gaze with sad eyes that held a bit of frustration. "I said hi, and then..." He moaned and put his hands on his head. "I'm such an asshole."
"What did you say?" you asked, more firmly this time as you grabbed his wrists. His eyes flew open, somewhat surprised by your aggressiveness.
"I'm so sorry. Really I am..." After a moment of silence, he looked away and you dropped his wrists. "I brought up the accident." He closed his eyes for a second before opening them again. "Now I've screwed everything up. Damn it." He kicked the ground lightly, looking like he'd rather be kicking himself. He looked back up and met your eyes. "It's just...I haven't seen either of you in at least two weeks. I was really worried about you guys...And then I got the feeling that you were avoiding me. I really wanted some answers, and I accidentally tried to get them from (y/n), but I shouldn't have pressed so hard. I shouldn't have said anything about it. She's probably still getting over it."He put his hands over his eyes and sighed before dropping his hands and looking at you. "(Y/n) said you had something to tell me. What is it?"
Your eyes searched his face, and you realized that despite being friends since you were little, despite everything you'd gone through together, you were scared. What if you told him what had really happened and he ran away from you? Then you thought about (y/n). What if she was there when you told him? You knew that he kind of liked her. What if he looked at her with disgust? You couldn't bear that.
So despite your original mission to trust Hide and tell him the truth, you just couldn't do it. Instead, you looked him in the eyes and said, "Listen, Hide. I don't want you to hurt my sister."
"I would never-" he began with a strained look, but you shook your head.
"You may not have the intention of doing so, but I can't risk (Y/n)'s happiness on you if I think you'll just make her feel pain."
Hide's eyes dropped, hurt and betrayal coloring them.
"With that said, I'm sorry, but you can't come to my house anymore."
"What?" he asked, looking up, half shocked, half angry. "What do you mean? Are you just going to cut all ties with me now? Pretend that I never existed, that we were never friends?"
You shook your head. "No. We're still friends. We can hang out anywhere, as long as my sister isn't there. Do you understand?"
Hide looked at you angrily. "So you're never letting me see her again?"
You hesitated. "For now. I don't know about later, but at least until we get over...what happened. Trust me, Hide. It's for the best."
He looked down at the ground, nodded, and walked away without saying another word. With a sigh, you went off to find (y/n).
~from Reader's POV 2nd person~
You sighed as you went back and forth on the swing of a nearby playground. Hide...I'm so sorry...But I just can't...
Kaneki walked up beside you and gave you a tired smile. "Hey, (y/n)."
"How'd it go?" you asked without looking at him, not sure if you wanted to see the look on his face right now.
There was a moment of hesitation, different from one of someone withholding information because it pained them. Then, "It went." You couldn't be sure, but you thought that he was hiding something from you.
Still, you shook the feeling off. Kaneki would never lie to you. He didn't know how to. Instead, you commented sadly, "So we won't be able to see Hide anymore, huh?"
He was quiet. There's my answer.
"C'mon," he said after a moment, extending a hand. "We should get back."
"Yeah." You stopped the swing by trailing your feet on the ground, and you reached out and accepted his hand. You walked back to Anteiku together, but feeling miles apart.

"Welcome back," Mr. Yoshimura said, his kindly face betraying no knowledge of whether or not he knew where you'd just gone. "There's a few people I want to introduce to you." He nodded towards a woman behind him, and she coaxed forward a small girl who met your eyes for one second before looking away. "This is Mrs. Fueguchi and her daughter, Hinami."
"Hello," the mother said, smiling sweetly although it looked a bit strained. "It's nice to meet you."
You nodded, and Kaneki added, "Nice to meet you, too."
The little girl hid behind her mother's skirt, and Mrs. Fueguchi turned to Touka, who was sweeping the shop. "Sorry to trouble you, Touka, but would you mind taking Hinami upstairs? She's still a bit...distressed."
Touka nodded and approached Hinami with a rare smile before taking her hand and leading her up the stairs and to the second level.
Kaneki looked inclined to talk with Mrs. Fueguchi, but as you were not especially socially-inclined, you followed the other girls upstairs with the excuse that you were tired and needed to lie down. Once upstairs, you paused in front of the door to your room, hearing laughter down the hall, and you found yourself slowly walking towards the sound. You stopped in front of the door that the voices were coming from, and after a second of indecision, you knocked. The voices stopped, and you heard footsteps coming towards the door.
Then it opened, with Touka's face peering out before frowning at you.
"I'm sorry," you said, looking down. "But...can I come in?"
