I woke up to sunlight burning my eyes and sat up in my bed. I stretched and looked to see that it was 7:00. "Great, now I only have an hour to get ready" I said to myself. I got out of the warmth of my bed and made my way to my bathroom. I took a quick shower, got dressed, and brushed my teeth. Not exactly in that order.

I grabbed my phone and rushed down the stairs to the kitchen. "Hi mom! Hi dad!"
"Hello Harley" they said in unison. I walked past my little brother and ruffled his hair. "Hey Carter Farter."
"Stop calling me that! Mom, make her stop calling me that!"
"She's just showing you she loves you Carter" my mom said smiling. He glared at me and I stuck my tongue out at him. "How are you the older sibling?"
I laughed and shrugged as I made my way to the front door. "Oh sweetie you're leaving already" my mom asked me. "Yes mom I told you last night. Everyone is meeting at Will's house before school" I groaned. "Well why don't they meet here. We have way more room at our house" my dad said. I just scoffed and walked out of the already opened door. Before I shut it I heard a faint "Happy Birthday!"

Oh yeah! I'm 17 today! I high fived myself while I continued the familiar walk to one of my best friend's house. I finally got there and walked through the door without knocking. It's just kind of something I do.

"The queen is here" I shouted. They laughed and said simultaneously "Happy Birthday Harley!"
I smiled and made my way to one of the stools by the counter next to Layla. "Hey Layla! Is Warren not here yet?"
"No. I think Will said he was going to be late" she said shrugging. At the mention of her and Will I wiggled my eyebrows and she slapped my arm. We continued talking until Layla motioned for me to look at the door.

"Hello handsome" I said as Warren walked over to me. "Hey gorgeous" he said kissing my cheek. "Ew! Get a room" I heard Ethan yell. I laughed and look over to Mrs. Stronghold. "No! Absolutely not" she yelled. We all laughed and Warren sat beside me. "Hey. Come her often?"
I laughed and shook my head. "What is taking Will so long" Layla asked. I rolled my eyes, knowing she wasn't going to do anything, and yelled "Will! Get your slow ass down here!"
Mrs. Stronghold gave me a look and I put my hands up in surrender. "Coming" we heard someone yell as footsteps made their way down the stairs. "Ready to go" Will asked as he went to stand next to Layla. "Yes" we all yelled.

We all walked out of the house towards the bus stop and all the couples were holding hands. The couples in our group are Will and Layla, Me and Warren, and Zach and Magenta. Poor Ethan was all alone. "Ethan I'm going to get you a girlfriend" I said to him. "No it's ok. I don't need one."
"A boyfriend then" Magenta asked. Ethan looked at her in horror and she laughed. "Just kidding."

On the bus we claimed a small section for our group and waited for the fun when the bus would start flying. We got off at the school and I turned to Will. "Why don't you just fly us to school? It's not like you can't hold us cause you have super strength" I questioned. He just shrugged and looked at me. "Never thought about it."
I rolled my eyes as I grabbed Warren's hand and walked towards our lockers. But of course, with my luck, Coach Boomer pulled me away from my friends.

"Davidson, I need you in the gym with me to help with power placement. I'm kinda new to not making everyone with pathetic powers a sidekick."
"Ugh. Fine. Can I at least bring someone with me?"
"Sure, but not hothead! I don't trust his anger issues. Bring Flower Child over there" he said pointing to Layla. Of course he wanted the girl that would make everyone a hero. "Layla! Come on we're going to help Coach" I shouted across the hallway. She gave Will a hug and made her way over to me. "What are we doing?"
"Boomer needs help with power placement, so he asked me and I said I would bring you" I said bored. God, I just wanted to go to class and sleep. Layla agreed and we followed Boomer to the gym where  the freshman were getting their speech from Principal Powers. "I'll be back" Boomer said as he left us alone in the back of the gym. "Great. He just abandoned us. Look at those freshman. That used to be us" I said as I put my arm over Layla's shoulders. It was kinda hard since she had gotten slightly taller than me over the summer. She was trying to stifle her laugh as she saw me struggling. "Shut up" I said pushing her. "Awe don't be sad that you're finally not able to lean on me. You were starting to get kind of heavy."
I gasped dramatically and held a hand over my heart. "Rude."
"Just kidding. You know I love you" she said giving me a side hug. "Yeah I'm sure you do, but you could show it by not suffocating me" I said while my words were muffled. "Oops. Sorry."
I rolled my eyes at her and turned back towards the students. The principal had just gotten done with her speech. She turned into a ball of light and flew over the heads of the amazed students. The ball of light stopped at the exit and turned back into our amazing principal. "Hello girls. Nice to see you two again" she said with a smile. "You too" Layla and I said in unison. She gave us one more smile before using her power and flying away.

I turned my head as I heard the stage coming up from the floor, but I didn't hear coach Boomer's normal yelling. I looked over the crowd of confused kids and saw the stage was bare. I looked at Layla and she looked just as confused as everyone else. I decided to take some action, mostly because I didn't want to be here longer than I needed to, and walked up and onto the stage.

"Listen up losers! This is power placement. My colleague, Layla, and I will be deciding on whether you should be a hero a sidekick" I motioned for Layla to come up on stage. She slowly made her way up on the stage next to me. Suddenly some kid shouted "Hey! Aren't you the two girls that helped save the school?"
I smiled as the students started to murmur, but I guess it lasted too long because I started to get annoyed. "Okay enough! Let's get this started. My name is Harley and my friend and colleague's name is Layla. Now if you don't show us the respect you would show for the teachers...well you're going to get a metal fist to the face" I said as I turned my lower arm to metal and clenched it into a tight fist. The students looked at me in amazement before I cleared my throat. "Alright. Let's get this show on the road!"

I had given Layla coach Boomer's clipboard with names. "Okay. First up is Liam Burchfield" Layla called out. We were standing off to the side of the raised platform and watched as a boy, who was fairly tall, walked up onto the stage. "Powers" I said in a monotone voice. "Um...I have a force field" he said nervously. "Cool. Let's see it. Car" I said jus at Boomer would and a car fell from the ceiling. The boy didn't even have to think before a bluish half circle went over him and the car rested on top of it. "Nice" I heard Layla say. I didn't really know where to put the kid because he could be a superhero, barely, but he would be a very useful sidekick. Since I couldn't make up my mind I asked the boy "Where do you think you should go?"
He looked startled by the question, but finally said "I know I should be a sidekick. I don't really have enough powers to be a hero" he said shrugging. "Fair enough. Sidekick it is. Don't worry though, the sidekick teacher is really cool" I said with a smile. He smiled and nodded birdies walking off of the stage. "Harper Graham" Layla shouted. A shy and timid looking girl walked up in the stage. "Powers" Layla asked kindly. "I-I h-h-have super strength."
I felt my face turn into a look of surprise and could tell Layla's was the same. "Well let's see it. Car."
The car fell and the girl caught it but I could tell she was having some trouble. It was obvious that she needed some training to reach her full potential. "Layla can you help her" I asked. "Already on it" she said concentrating. Vines came in through the partially opened windows and lifted the car off the girl. "You're a hero," I said, "but you're going to need some help to reach your full potential."
"Yes ma'am" she said with a wide smile. Just so this doesn't go on all day, most of the kids were sidekicks. And I wasn't being mean. There were only a few heroes. The ones that did become heroes had super strength, one had invisibility, another had ice powers, one girl could fly, and one boy could read minds and had super human agility. There were some more, but those were the ones that were coolest to me. It was finally lunch and Boomer had come in at the end of the first half saying that he would take the rest of the day.

"That was so boring" I groaned as Layla and I made our way through the crowd of people to the cafeteria. "No it wasn't" Layla said. I gave her a look and she sighed. "Okay it kind of was. There weren't that many heroes this year. Last year I knew coach Boomer was being unfair, but this year I just couldn't fight with you."
"Yeah. I guess kids will just never be as cool as us" I said shoving her lightly. We made our way into the cafeteria, finally, and saw our friends sitting at a table. "There they are" I said to Layla. "Awe they got us food. Our boyfriends are so good to us" Layla said with a hand over her heart. "That's what you think," I said snorting, "Warren got both of those plates for him."

We walked to the table and I sat down next Warren. "Hey everybody" I said as I laid my head onto his shoulder. "Someone seems tired. How was power placement" he asked as he laid his head in top of mine. "Good. There wasn't many heroes this year. A couple of cool kids" I said with a shrug. "Well," he said with a small laugh as he lifted his head off of mine, "I got both of these for me, but you can eat off of it if you want."
I looked over at Layla and gave her an "I told you so" look. She rolled her eyes and looked behind me. "What are you looking at" I asked before I felt someone sit beside me. "Hey Harley. How was your day" the boy said as he kissed the side of my head and put his arm around me.  I whipped my head around and wrapped a metal hand around the boy's wrist and felt it get hotter. I learned over the summer that I could change the temperature of my metal depending on my mood, but that's not the point right now. "Who the hell are you?"
