"David?"

Her voice trembled, in a way he'd never heard it before. Pressing the phone closer to himself, David leaned anxiously against the table, before him.

"Elaina, what is it? What's wrong?"

He could hear her breathing. Each inhale coming quickly, each exhale sharp.

"Elaina?", he repeated, his tone stronger this time.

It seemed to reassure her. There was some bustling around, before her voice came again, louder, and closer maybe.

"I don't know, but I think someone's after me... or something. I don't know. I should hang up, call the police. Something's not-"

She was interrupted by a crashing sound, David almost mistook for static.

"Elaina!"

He screamed, standing rigid, like some threatened animal.

There was no reply.

He thrust the phone down, and the next moment, was at his door, fumbling with the keys. Something was wrong, that he was sure of, now, and he'd be darned if he was going to keep out of it, any longer.
