Maria sat, trailing her fingers idly around the rim of the teacup, as she stared blankly ahead. The murky city air did nothing to clear her spinning her, neither did the coffee that had now gone cold.
She felt like an empty vessel being occupied by a soulless person. Confused, disjointed. Hurt.

A trail of warm tears trailed down her face, leaving a dreaded line through the makeup she had put on to conceal the eye bags formed from sleepless nights. How was it possible for someone to hurt so much, yet she felt so empty?

Maria asked herself the question repeatedly until it had become a daily quote, and now here she sat while grief ate her apart.

"Hello," a voice said, a shadow forming on the table and over her cup of cold coffee.

Maria quickly wiped the tears from her face, somewhat feeling embarrassed at the fact that someone had caught her crying.

She finally looked up, and squinted, the sun hitting her eyes harshly. A silhouette of a man was the only thing she saw before she brought her head down again.
