I want to dedicate this chapter, no, this story, to a dear friend of mine. She stuck with me through thick and thin, and although we are very different, we get along great. moonshadow123456 Although I don't see her as much as I want to, I'm still glad I get the privilege of having a friend like her.

I wasn't sure why I had woken up,
because everything looked normal.
There was no sound, other than the gentle chirp of crickets.
Moonlight crept in through a space between my curtains,
casting a ray of light across the floor.
I stood up, tired,
and made my way to the door.
The doorknob reflected the ray of light,
and the figure in the dark.
I held my breath, and listened.
Ragged breaths reached my ears,
and it took every ounce of courage in me not to scream.
I reached for the doorknob,
the feel of the cold metal giving me goosebumps.

I twisted it, and pulled the door open.
Seconds ticked by as I gazed into the dark hallway.
There was no sound behind me anymore.
It had all gone quiet.
I took a cautious step out of the room, and then another.
The hallway was cold and unwelcoming in the dark,
and I wanted to go back in my room.
But the sounds,
And the figure in the dark.
Surely I was hearing and seeing things.
The hallway window was wide open,
Allowing moonlight to flood the hall.
I covered my mouth with my hand,
Trying to stop the pending scream. The window,
now opened, was locked before I went to bed.

And standing next to it, casting a long shadow,
was another dark figure. I froze, rooted to the spot.
Every breath was slow and silent,
and my fingers ached to move.
I was telling myself to run,
But I couldn't move.
I was immobilized by fear.

"Fear can be a dangerous thing."
A voice whispered in my ear.
My eyes widened, and I felt panic taking over.
I stumbled forward, tripped, fell,
and tumbled down the stairs.
I could tell there would be bruises,
if I made it out of this alive.
When I reached the bottom of the stairs,
Everything hurt.
I could barely move.
The fear and pain combined was crushing.
I could barely breath. I heard thumps as someone started walking down the stairs.
In one final, desperate attempt to live, I crawled under the stairs,
My body sore and broken.

Because of the dark, I hadn't been seen,
But I was unsure if it would last.
I was passed by a dark shape, and I held my breath again.
I was positive I was going to die.
People don't just have break into houses,
And not kill the witnesses.
They just don't do that.
I looked up, and found myself looking at a black and white balloon, floating nearby.
I had the urge to reach out for it.
And I started to.
But I stopped myself.

I couldn't trust it.
"You can't hide from us."
The voice was right next to me.
I looked over, and saw myself looking at a pair of glowing eyes.
The rest should have killed me.
First, there were sirens, and lights.
Then I was forced out from under the stairs, and thrown out the window.
I smashed into the front of the truck in the driveway, and spat up blood.
I was positive I was a goner.
I saw two people coming for me, pushing a stretcher along with them.
I reached my hand out,
Out towards the sky.
Watching the light start to fade.
They loaded me onto the stretcher, and I was pushed to the ambulance.
The last of the light faded as I fainted, the dark consuming me.
