"Guys, homecoming is only a day away! When is Maya going to ask me!?" I panicked to Zay, Farkle, and Lucas.

"Relax Riley, I'm sure Maya will ask you soon." Lucas reassures me. "She probably has something big planned."

"I'm still confused on what exactly you and Maya have. Somebody needs to make this unofficial thing official." Zay says. "One of you needs to ask the other to be your girlfriend already! Remember what happened with Lucas and the semi-formal?"

The four of us flashback to middle school. Charlie Gardner had asked me to the semi-formal while Lucas just assumed we were going together.

"You don't think that Maya would just assume, would she?" Lucas asks, shifting uncomfortably after being reminded of his mistake.

"No, she's not stupid enough to do that." Farkle says. Lucas shoots him a glare. "Sorry, not sorry." Farkle shrugs.

I open my locker to find a giant teddy bear stuffed in there. "Is this it!?" I shout excitedly. I grab the bear and read the note attached to it.

I would be BEARy happy if you went to homecoming with me.

~Charlie

I wrinkle my nose in disgust. Why was Charlie even still trying? I made it clear that I didn't like him.

"Did Maya finally ask you?" Lucas looks over my shoulder and frowns. "Oh." He says.

"So what do you say?" I whip my head around to find the boy himself standing there. He had a hopeful grin on his face. "I know that you have that thing with Maya, but seeing as she still hasn't asked you, can we just go as friends?" Charlie gives me a small smile.

I sigh. Well, looks like Maya wasn't gonna ask. The day was already over and I didn't want to go to homecoming alone. Sure, I could go with Zay, Farkle, and Lucas, but they all had dates and I don't want to ruin any of their moments. Besides, I would just be a seventh wheel.

"Yes Charlie." I say unenthusiastically. "I'll go to homecoming with you." Charlie's face lights up and he shoots me an earsplitting smile.

I hear someone take a sharp intake of breath. I turn around to find...Maya. Oh no, she heard all of that! Maya had a bouquet of roses in her hand and it was obvious she was about to ask me.

"Maya..." I say, seeing the heartbroken look on her face. I see her try to hide her hurt behind a mask of indifference. "It's okay Riles. I knew I shouldn't have waited till the last minute. Have fun with Charlie." She says, tossing the roses in the trash. She walks away, head down, looking defeated.

I groan and slam my head into my locker. "Oh come on!" Lucas, Farkle, and Zay shoot me glances of sympathy.

"So, I'll pick you up at 6?" Charlie asks awkwardly, knowing he was the reason for this disaster. I just nod my head, not sure what else to say. I couldn't just tell him no after I already said yes. That would just be cruel.

Homecoming was tonight and so far, Maya had been avoiding me the whole day. She didn't come to pick me up this morning and didn't even look at me in history class. As soon as the bell rang, she had bolted from her seat and exited the room in a blink. She wasn't at lunch either, giving me no chance to explain everything to her.

"I can't believe this is happening." I mumble to Farkle. It was the end of the day and I haven't had any interaction with Maya for the whole day.

"I'll admit this situation may not be the best. But maybe there's a way you could make it up to her at homecoming." Farkle says.
