Reese was the stay at home dad, while Charlize worked as a police officer. When Reese left, he demanded he get to take Beau because Charlize wouldn't be able to raise their child while working in order to financially supporting them (Reese came from money). Charlize agreed, because she had recently been promoted to deputy chief of police and was flat-out busy and she thought Reese could give Beau a better life.
