Deception

~Chapter 18

Days passed and nothing changed. The same old Kira reports were on Tv, Matsuda and Mr. Yagami hung out with my dad more. Light and I had grown closer together as well. I was just waiting for him to get back from the station after dropping off some spare clothes for his dad when it had started to snow. I watched as he returned down the sidewalk with some bags in his hands. I smiled widely and waved at him. "Light, you're back!!!" I rushed to him and hugged him tightly. "Whoa whoa, you're going to make me drop this stuff!" He laughed at me. I tilted my head to the side in confusion. "What is that stuff anyway?" I asked him. Light simply smiled and nodded towards his house. I furrowed my brows and cautiously headed inside his house. The door was unlocked and the light were off. "Turn them on." Light ordered ad he stood behind me. I flicked the lights on and Saiyu popped up with Mrs. Yagami. "SURPRISE!!!" They popped confetti making me laugh. "What is all this?" I giggled as Light passed me by. He put the stuff on the table and pulled a birthday hat out of the bag.

"You've got to tell me that you didn't forget your own birthday May." Light put the hat on my head and adjusted it. I felt my cheeks heat up. "I... I really forgot it." I felt embarrassed. Light and Saiyu laughed while his mother approached me for a hug. "That's alright. I wanna thank you for coming into our lives. You really are something special." She pulled away and thanked me. I looked down shyly and nodded. Saiyu then pushed a brightly wrapped box in my face. "Happy birthday, this is from me!" She seemed extremely giddy that I open it soon. I shook my head and chuckled.

"Oh my goodness Saiyu, this is really cool!" I pulled the fingerprint kit out of the box. She seemed proud that I liked her gift. "You're totally welcome. I got the idea from dad. Also, Light gave me a hint too." She giggled. I hugged her a placed the gift down to receive another one from Light's mom. I opened it to see a lovely hand-knit quilt. I immediately hugged it close to my body as Mrs. Yagami spoke up. "This was something I knitted for Light and Saiyu when they were kids. It's time to pass it down and hopefully you'll be able to give it to your kids someday as well." I looked over to see Light blushing. I smiled widely and thanked her once more. Then Light passed me two bags. "These are both from me." I nodded and fiddled through one bag. I pulled out a book with a magnifying glass attached. It was definitely about detectives. The other bag was just a basket of perfumes, candy, and one pair of underwear that made me blush. I looked up at Light and he chuckled. No doubt he put the underwear there just to make me flustered for a joke... Or did he expect to see me in them someday? Oh well, underwear is underwear. It's even better if it's free!

"Thanks so much everyone. All this detective stuff though... How did you know Light?" I questioned him while he pulled a chocolate cake out of the fridge. He pulled a chair out for me and ushered for me to sit down. "Well when we're in the library studying sometimes I notice that you check out some Law related stuff. Plus, it's pretty obvious by now that you look up to my dad a lot. I just put 2 and 2 together. Context rules basically." He chuckled as he dug through the kitchen drawer. Saiyu was behind me and his mother stood in front with a camera she retrieved. I watched Light put 20 candles on the cake and light them each. His mom snapped a few pictures before we could even begin! They sung happy birthday to me and as I blew out the candles, Light pressed his lips to my cheek. Light's mom snapped a picture of the perfect moment and we all enjoyed cake.

"Goodbye May!!! Thanks for coming by!!!" Saiyu shouted as Light walked me home. "Thanks so much for today. It was an amazing birthday you know. You're an amazing boyfriend." I kissed him deeply and pulled away to see his blush. "You're more than amazing May. Don't forget about the entrance exams in a few days. I'll text you and remind you. We've got one more study session then the other 3 days will be relaxation. Finally the day before the test will be cramming, and the night will be us going to bed on time. That means we won't be able to spend the whole time together. Anyways, I love you and I'll see you tomorrow for the first session. Happy birthday." Light kissed my forehead and headed back home. I smiled and tried to enter the house quietly because I was way past my curfew but my dad was waiting on the couch. "I'm so sorry I'm late, I just-"

"Happy birthday MiMi!" He shouted my embarrassing nickname out. I groaned and rolled my eyes at him. "There isn't a curfew anymore now that you're 20. I'm sorry I was at work most of the day anyway but I'm here now. I trust that Light took over the party for you?" He chuckled and pulled me into a hug. I nodded at him. Then I placed all my presents from today on the living room table only to have another box shoved in my face. I chuckled and fiddled with the bow as my dad explained. "This is from Light's dad. He apologizes that he couldn't make it today. He's knee deep in the Kira case right now. Matsuda is too so he wanted me to give you this." Dad placed a box on top of the other one. "Well go on, open them!" He seemed as excited as Saiyu. I laughed and opened Matsuda's gift first. It turned out to be a really nice digital camera and a mini printer as well. When I opened Mr. Yagami's gift it was a badge holder with no badge, an empty gun holder, pepper spray, a walkie talkie set, and an application for the task force headquarters. Plus there was a letter that I just had to read.

I appreciate that you are so very interested in my occupation. I can't tell it's always been a dream of yours to work alongside detectives but please, you have your whole life ahead of you. Good luck on entrance exams and happy birthday.

"Wow all of this is so cool." My eyes twinkled at the gifts. My dad put a hand on my shoulder and smiled warmly before handing me an envelope. "Dad what's this?" I looked at it curiously. "It's from me. Open it and see what's inside."
