"Mommy," Seven-year-old Theodore said looking up at his mother one day after school.
"Yes love," Emilia said turning around looking at her son.
"Why do I see colors, when I am around Monique, but she doesn't see them when I am with her," Theodore asked looking down at his bowl of cereal, his voice growing softer.
Emilia felt her whole world spin, she knew exactly the problem she was facing, he was one of the few whose soul mate wasn't actually their soul mate.
"Well, Sometimes things like this happen, but don't worry about it Theo, you will understand much more once you're older," Emilia said not wanting to worry her son, she also wanted to make sure that he had a childhood, and not have to grow up early.
"Oh Okay Mommy," Theodore said sliding off the chair and walking into his room and picking up his book.
Emilia sighed, before picking up the phone and dialing her husband's number.
"Chase, It happened, it's happened to us," Emilia said in a hushed panic tone, so that if Theo was listening he wouldn't panic.
"What's happened Em, did we get burgled did the cat die, did we win the lotto what happened!"
"Theo, he can't see colors, well he can, but his soul mate isn't his sole mate, she doesn't see colors while around him, I mean I know some humans don't grow their colours till their older but it isn't looking good for our wee Theo," Emilia said not wanting to let her emotions show.
"I'll be right home,"
It wasn't till Theo was 14 that his parents truly understood what his parents meant, He knew that he would not be able to see colors unless he and Monique continued to be friends, but he knew that once Monique had found her sole mate he wouldn't be able to see the colours of a sunset on a morning, or the beautiful colours of a cold winter's day, although Monique had voweled to be his friend to the end of times, he didn't want to hold her back in life.
Present Day.
"Hey, Mom I'm home," Eighteen-year-old Theo said walking into his family home with his Friends, Buster and Monique by his side.
"Hey Love, Buster, Monique" Emilia said walking out of the kitchen, closely followed by Theo's youngest sister Gretchen.
"How was school," Emilia asked knowing she would have the same conversation with her other daughter Rae later on.
"It was good, we had someone come in to talk to us about colleges, even though applications don't open for six more months" Buster said responding to Emilia.
"That's good Buster, but I actually was asking my son"
"Right, Mrs. Kingswater," Buster said snapping his fingers.
The three teens walked off to sit in the back yard.
"Let's make senior year the best we have ever had," Monique said smiling at her friends.
"Let's do it, so have you guys given any thought unto what college y'all are going to go to," Monique asked lying on the ground looking up at the clouds passing overhead in the sky above.
Theo felt his heart sink, he knew that Monique and he would be splitting ways at the end of the year meaning that he would no longer be able to see colors unless they caught up here and there. Theo sighed.
"I was thinking of taking a gap year, I'm not too entirely sure what I am wanting to study, besides I much rather spend a year deciding then wasting money on something I don't want to do," Theo said avoiding eye contact.
Monique knew that Theo saw colors around her , he had always been 100% honest with his friends, but Theo knew that Monique would feel obligated to stay behind.
"But don't worry, I'll be fine you guys do what you want to do,"
The gang finished talking, before Monique jumped the fence and walked towards her house, while Buster and Theo walked towards the front door.
"Hello Buster," Rae said walking down the stairs grabbing an apple and tossing in the air.
"Why Hello Rae," Buster said smiling as Gretchen ran up to him smiling widely at him
"Buster, Buster, Buster, look I lost a tooth," Gretchen said showing the missing space where the tooth used to lie.
"Oh so you have, now the tooth fairy is obviously paying you a visit tonight," Buster said smiling at the young child.
Buster had always made an effort to get along with Theo's siblings. He knew that it was always a good thing being able to get along with your siblings friends and making them feel welcome, which is why he had always made an effort to get along with his bro's sisters.
"Why, Yes she is, and I am going to try and see her." Gretchen said making herself seem taller while he ginger dirty blonde hair fell off her shoulders.
"Ya'll know the tooth fairy doesn't come if your awake," Rae said looking up from her phone.
"Naha"
"Yeaha"
"Naha" Gretchen said starting to tear up.
"You Know Gretch, I saw a tooth fairy once.
"You did, what did she look like" Gretchen said as her eyes widened.
"well, she looked like anything you would expect a tooth fairy to look like, but do you know what"
"what"
"she caught me looking at her, and she didn't leave any money. so the next night I went to bed extra early and didn't look out for the tooth fairy. and I woke up to find money under my pillow." Buster said looking at the small child expressions.
"Well I better go now," Buster said walking out of the family home and down the road to his own one.
"I am going to go to bed now night," Gretchen said heading for her room.
"Um Gretch, It's only 5 o'clock and besides you haven't had any dinner yet,"
"But the tooth fairy,"
"I am sure the tooth fairy will still come if you stay up a wee bit longer,"
"Okay Theo,"
