Chapter 15: A Walk in the Woods

I sat down with a PB & J sandwich with Vanessa and Grace on either side of me.  Aric sat next to Vanessa and Marcus was on the other side of Grace.  They decided to put the strongest people in our group next to me just in case Hunter decided to try and talk to me.  Vanessa and Grace were the strongest verbal fighters and Aric and Marcus can break someone’s arm if they wanted to.  That’s why I am friends with them, they’ll stand up for me whenever I need it.  Miles sat across from me, watching my emotions.  I shook my head, knowing h wanted to try and control my emotions again and make me feel better.  He looked at me sadly, but I could tell he liked the fact that I hated Hunter now.  Now he had to deal with Jerome.

I sat with my back facing the door.  I stared at my sandwich, barely hungry, but I started eating it anyways.  Grace kept glancing to her left, watching Hunter sit with Sam.  I hoped she didn’t hold a grudge against Sam for being Hunter’s best friend.  Grace and Sam were a good couple, even if I didn’t like Sam.

“Hey,” someone said behind me.  I turned around and looked at Jerome with his right arm in a cast, his left leg in a medical boot, and his left arm had cotton patches taped over the wrist.  Dugger stood behind him; a scar running down his arm, from the inside of his wrist to his biceps.

“Hey, you’re back,” I replied trying to sound happy, but my voice scratched from a sudden lack of confidence.  This will get awkward fast.  I sighed in self-pity, not wanting awkwardness between me and Jerome.

“Yeah, I was actually surprised my dad allowed me to stay.  My step mom tried to convince him to take me home, but she gave in,” he said, he looked almost ecstatic for some reason.  You’d think that he would still look horrified from his injuries, but he looked like they didn’t even happen, accept for the bandages.

“Hey do you mind if we sit here,” Dugger asked randomly, making everyone at the table quiet down and stare at them.  They were used to Dugger, and surprised he asked.

“Yeah, you can sit next to me,” Aric said patting the empty seat next to him.

“Can I sit next to Karissa actually,” Jerome asked out of nowhere.

“Go ahead, I’ll pull up a seat,” Vanessa said getting up and grabbing an empty seat from the table behind her.  Jerome sat in the seat Vanessa got up from, and she squeezed in between Jerome and Aric.  “So how are you doing Jerome,” she asked sitting down.  She placed her elbow on the table and rested her chin on the back of her hand.  That pose made her look extremely interested.

“The doctor said I should go back in three days.  He said I will be fully healed by then.  The cut on my arm doesn’t even hurt,” he said, “and my broken arm is almost finished healing, and I don’t really need the cast on my leg.  All the other cuts I got are gone now, except the one on my neck.” He put his hand on the wrap that was on the back of his neck.  For some reason, it made me feel better to hear that he was healing fast.  It made butterflies in my stomach.

“Wow, you heal really fast,” Vanessa said her voice soft but surprised.

“Yeah, supernatural people can usually heal fast,” he said.  I guess he understood that Vanessa knew about mutants, even though she never said anything about it.

“You’re a supernatural,” a smile grew on Vanessa’s face.  She put her head on her arms, seeming really interested now.  She flirted a little, but not really towards him.  She was eyeing me, making me uncomfortable.
