Or Jack torrance he was a mean drunk turned psycho with a axe and the promise of alcohol. Now you got a cast learn as much about them as you can.
For a horror story it's a good idea to make your protagonist as human as possible give them faults. They can be for example a drunk, drug addict, they can just be a plain jerk or is there something this character has done to reck Havoc on there life. Take the girl on the train for example she was made unreliable and her flaw is she's a drunk and the other girl is a adultery and the other is unhappy in her marriage.
