The bit that always gets me is when Christine hands the ring back in the final lair and the phantom says "Christine I love you." When Christine breaks down it shows how hard it is to say goodbye but knows she will have a better life with Raoul (or will she😉LND)
The phantom looks so desperate like he is willing to hang onto any bit of hope that keeps him and Christine to ether. He knows what she is doing is the right thing and he finally comes to terms with the fact that what he did was wrong and his deformity isn't the problem. It is his soul that is ugly
