I made a new friend yesterday. She’s really pretty, and she reminds me of a queen or princess. Her eyes are emerald green, and her hair is black like the night sky. I wish I knew her real name, but she told me that I could only call her Nee-chan - Well actually, she only said I could call her Onee-san, but I like to call her Nee-chan. I wonder if she’s royalty.  I met her the other day when she happened to fall into my room. I think she was eavesdropping when I was talking to myself, but I was lonely. I had just been wishing myself for a friend, and she appeared. I had been making paper cranes ever since my nurse told me that by making paper cranes to make a wish come true. I didn’t know what I really wanted to wish for after Nee-chan came, but maybe I can grant her a wish. After all, she granted my wish. It’s the least I could do for her.

“Ah! Nee-chan! You could’ve come through the door!” I glanced over at my open window as the nimble woman leaped in.

“They locked mine with some new gadget or whatever,” she grumbled, her bright green eyes flashing angrily. She wasn’t wearing the normal hospital gown, but she was clad in black pajamas.  As she gracefully stood to her feet, she scowled at the band around her hand.

I couldn’t help but giggle just a bit. “Mh, so since you’re here, will you help me?” I piped up, holding up more origami paper. “The nurse helped me get more colors! And these ones are shiny!”

I watched her examine the paper squares for a while before finally taking a seat next to my bed. “Here, hand me that red one,” was all she said.

I beamed happily, sitting up straighter and folding an orange crane. Setting it into the shoebox I retrieved from under the bed, I held it out to Nee-chan. “Here, we’ll store all the cranes here so we can make your wish come true!”

I noticed the startled surprise that appeared in her eyes when I mentioned the wish. But…I didn’t know why. “W-What, Nee-chan? Don't you have a wish?”

“…” The young woman looked out the window as if with wistfulness. “My wish, huh, Koi…”

“Heyy! I told you, Nee-chan, my name’s not Koi! It’s Kohaku!” I argued, but I wanted to hear what her wish was. “But what is it, your wish?”

“My wish? Well,” she turned back to me with a slightly teasing smile. “If I tell you my wish, it may not come true, right?”

I couldn’t help but feel slightly disappointed. “That is true…but! I’ll tell you my wish that already came true!” I grinned. “I wished for a friend, and you’re here now!”

Nee-chan didn’t say anything, but she just focused on creasing her paper crane, which she tossed into the shoe box. “So why are you here, Koi?”

I sighed, giving up on telling her to call me the right name. “Well, Daddy and Morgan sent me here because I’m sick,” I piped up, pulling the wings of the crane in my hand.

“You don’t even call your mother by her first name?” Nee-chan glared at me with slight annoyance, I would assume.

"Ah…Morgan’s not my mom.” I noticed her discomfort and waved the mistake off. “Maah, don’t worry about it, Nee-chan. It’s okay.”

Suddenly, I saw tears trickling down her cheek slowly. One drop, then two, then five. “N-Nee-chan,” my vision was starting to blur. “P-Please don’t cry. I already got over it…but if you cry…I just might remember my hurt and cry again.”

She just laid her head on top of my blankets, and I gently petted her silky black hair. It felt cold and smooth. I remembered hoping at that moment that I would be there long enough to grant her wish.
