Chapter 1: First Encounter

They were driving on their way to college, when Cameron's voice suddenly snapped her thoughts. "So, did you sleep well?" he asked as she just looked at him.

Cameron Lloyd, Vanessa's best friend since the 7th grade. They were now both 21, and he's been there for her through thick and thin.

He was always a bit secretive about his family though, apart from his parents being divorced a really long time ago and he lives with his mother. Only after they got to college, he finally revealed that he has a now, 19 years old younger brother, Christopher, whom Vanessa never met. Not wanting to sound like a busybody, she just assumed that Christopher lived with his father, hence, why Cameron never really talked about him.

"Yeah, I guess.'' she replied lazily and stared into the distance, thinking deeply about someone. Cameron furrowed his eyebrows.

"Okay... You do know you're being quiet the whole time, right?" he spoke in a matter of fact tone. She sighed. She was just... missing someone.

"Yeah, sorry. My mind is somewhere else."

He watched her curiously, and tried to cheer her up by playing her favorite song on the radio. "It's him isn't it? Like they always said, 'Distance means so little when someone means so much.'" He grinned.

"You sound so cheesy."

"But you love me, don't you?" he smirked and gave her his so-called famous wink when he's flirting with girls, which she personally finds disgusting. She scoffed and rolled her eyes at his question. "Oh, and Nessa," he suddenly spoke and added, "Do you know what's happening today?''

She looked at him blankly, trying to remember something, probably, important. He sighed and gave her his 'are you kidding me?' look as something came to her mind. "Oh yeah, it's Christopher's first entry to college, right?"

He nodded and smiled happily. "I can't wait for you to meet him, Nessa. He doesn't talk much but he'll get better. I promise."

Somehow, Vanessa was excited to see Christopher.

At last, they arrived at their destination. From afar they could see Jade, Scott, and Katherine, their closest friends in college, standing at the entrance and waving their hands when they saw them. She instinctively waved back while Cameron was busy being a gentleman, trying to carry her bags as she grinned at the sight, and walked faster towards them.

"Vanessa!" Jade and Katherine screamed in unison and gave her a big hug, as if they haven't seen her for years.

Well actually, Vanessa didn't live in a dorm, due to her house being just a few meters away from college. So, she didn't really get to see them as much as they did with each other, except for Cameron, since he had always insisted to take her here and send her home whenever he could. Also, Vanessa happened to have a phobia of driving.

"Guys please stop acting like I'm back from a long trip!"

They chuckled and let go, as Scott ruffled her hair. "It honestly sucks that you're not living in a dorm with us. You know, we can't seem to spend a lot more time with you." He faked a sob, and Cameron punched his arm out of nowhere, making him groan.

"Dude, stop it. You're embarrassing." Cameron said with a grossed-out face and shook his head in disbelief as Scott glared at him. "Anyways, you should eat, Nessa. You didn't have breakfast."
