Chapter one: summer before (edited)

"Umm, I'll ask." I said to by best friend over the phone. "Mom! Can I go to Maya's house?"

"Okay, but remember that school starts tomorrow so don't stay up too late." My mom liked Maya.

We've been friends since kindergarten. I walked the short distance to her house and was greeted immediately by her yapping chihuahua, Chica. "Hey Payton! Come help me set this up!"

Her mom called from the backyard.

I jogged back to find Maya's mom and her setting up a slide for Rose.

Rose was the sweetest little girl in the world. She liked to touch my hair because she wanted to be blonde.

I guess I was lucky I had really great hair.

Note the sarcasm.

I hurried over to help lift it.

In a little over 20 minutes we were done.

Maya and I went to her room and started talking about tomorrow.

We had to go to the new school to take a tour that night.

Her mom drove us over and we picked up our schedules.

We only had second period together.

Forensic science.

We both jumped at that class because it seemed to be the most laid back.

We did have lunch together though.

I was smarter, not to brag.

We weren't in the same academic circle.

I was among the 40 10th graders who got to take trigonometry and skip Algebra.

That would let me take 2 years of college math in high school.

I was excited, since I want math over with.

We looked around, totally confused.

"No!" I'm supposed to be home. "It's almost 10! My mom's gonna kill me!"

We hugged goodbye and I ran full speed the 2 miles home.

I ran to my room and went to sleep before my lovely mother could come interrogate me.
