He liked the way she kept touching his hand as she talked. She was always gesturing with her small hands, tugging at her hair, reaching across the table to touch his arm or his hand as if she had known him for years.
And he liked the way her red hair fell,  tangled and wild. Lora was always fussing with her hair. It had to be perfect, not a hair out of place. But Shannon didn't seem to care. She tossed her hair back over her shoulder as she talked or twirled a strand around her fingers or tugged at it smiling as she leaned forward to listen to him.
She smiled at him with those dark pouty lips. Her smile was knowing almost smug not at all an innocent little girl's smile.
The restaurant was empty except for a pair of silent old men hunched over cups of coffee and four tough looking teenagers Scotty had never seen before in a booth next to the window.
He felt comfortable knowing that no one from school would see him here. And he felt excited here with Shannon, a kind of excitement he had never felt in his life. The excitement of doing something wrong.
O4 of thinking about doing something wrong.
Of course he kept reassuring himself there's nothing wrong with having a hamburger with someone and driving her home. It's not like Lora and I are married he thought, scolding himself for feeling guilty.
"You're a senior right?" Shannon asked wiping hamburger juice off her chin with a paper napkin.
"Yeah. You too?"
She nodded. "What are you doing after graduation?"
"Oh I am going yo Princeton" he said casually. "Where are you going?"
She looked down. "Probably look for a job I guess"
He could feel his face redden. Zhe must really think I'm a rich jerk he thought. Why did I assume she was going to college?
"I'm . . . Uh . . . hoping to get a scholarship" he added quickly. "My mom can't really afford it unless I get a scholarship"
"Where's your dad?" She asked.
Scotty was little startled by the question. He responded with a broad shrug, as if to say, "who knows?"
For some reason this struck Shannon as funny. Her laugh was high and fragile like the tinkling of a glass wind chime.
They talked for a n hour after their hamburgers were finished. Scotty was usually exhausted after a football game but being with her was keeping him wide awake.
They didn't have much in common. She hated school, hated Glenview, seemed generally unhappy with her life But didn't have any plan for changing it. Unlike Scotty and Lora and their friends she didn't seem to have any ambition any goals any dream.
As he drove her home she slid low in the seat her knees on the dashboard. She turned on the radio and cranked up the volume until the entire car throbbed and vibrated and sang along in the whispery voice ignoring Scotty entirely except to point the directions to her house.
The house was little box, so small Scotty nearly drove right past it. It was entirely dark. He drove up the dirt driveway, his headlights rolling over a rusted pickup truck, tireless, up on cinder blocks in this middle of the narrow front yard. The house was white clapboard hut looked as if it hadn't been painted for a long time.
Scotty closed off the blaring radio.
"Home sweet home" Shannon said sighing.
How do her three big wrestler brothers fit into that tiny house? Scotty wondered.
He jumped out ran around the car through the twin white headlight beams and pulled open the car door. She reached up her hands and he pulled her to her feet on the soft dirt drive.
To his surprise she didn't let go of his hands. Squeezing them tightly in her warm hands, she leaned forward, raised herself on tiptoe and pressed her mouth against his.
Her lips were wet and burning hot.
Her soft hair brushed against his face.
She leaned forward, pressing against him. He started to back away, but realised she didn't want the kiss to end.
Giving it to it, he put his arms around her.
She kissed harder, harder.
Hungrily.
Finally she let go. Backed away. Smiled up at him. That sexy knowing smile.
Wow, he thought.
"Thanks for the lift" she said breathing hard.
"Uh . . . no problem " he couldn't think of anything else to say. "Hey --- almost forgot your bike"
he could still feel the heat of her mouth on his and feel the brush if her hair against his face. Feeling crazy and exhausted and excited and confused all at once, he walked quickly to the trunk, opened it and pulled out the bike.
"You can just leave it here.ome of my brothers will fix it for me in the morning" she said pulling the light plastic windbreaker around her.
He set it down beside the drive.
"Shannon --- are you busy tomorrow night?"
"What?"
He walked back toward her. "Do you want to go tog a movie or something?"
She smiled. The half moon in the dark, starless sky above them sparkled in her eyes.
I don't belive I just asked her out he thought.
What am I doing?
"Yes. Okay. Neat" she said.
"I'll come by about seven"
What am i doing?
She turned and ran quickly to the dark house without looking back. He climbed into the car closed the door and looker for her. But she had disappeared.  Probably already inside.
The car bumped over the dirt driveway as he backed out to the street.
One date us no big deal, Scotty thought.
Lora into off in Paris and London having the time of her life. Why shouldn't I have a little fun, too?
Besides, Lora will never know . . .
