Evan woke up to a coffee smell. He gazed at the empty spot adjacent to him - the covers were strewn around. He made the bed, and went to the bathroom to freshen up.
They had made some kind of routine. It was mostly avoiding each other. However, Gia allowed a time frame in the morning to prepare breakfast for the two of them, and sometimes when she wasn't busy she would also make lunch.
"Hey," he greeted her but was met with a closed-off expression. At last, she quietly mumbled "good morning" back. He didn't care. But, he attempted to be civil at least, although, it sometimes felt like Gia made no effort at all. That irritated him.
They caught each other's eye for a moment when his lips met the mug, but then he looked away quickly because it was awkward. The immediate silence that followed was resounding. Without further ado, he grabbed his lunch and headed to work.
