Chapter One: Snapping Snapple Bottles

Ethan took a long swig of beer. It was one of the only types of alcohol he could sneak into Dakota’s house. Dakota was watching him, so he couldn’t let on how much he enjoyed the beer.

“Let’s do something,” Dakota whined. “C’mon, Ethan, we’re bored.

Ethan rolled his bright green eyes. Gwen and Gabe didn’t look bored. Dakota didn’t look bored. Ethan definitely wasn’t bored. Espi was sleeping, but she was always sleeping.

“Let’s go to the lot,” Gwen said, closing her laptop.

“There’s no action there,” Gabe complained, pushing his baseball cap down past his eyes, flattening out his hazel hair against his head.

“Then let’s make action.” Dakota sat on his lap and started flicking his hat. “We can’t be the only people sitting in on a Friday night. Besides, Ellinora said she was gonna stop by, and I know you and Espi will wanna see her.”

            Gabe blushed slightly. “Fine.”

Dakota laughed and pulled Gabe off the couch. Ethan followed them with his eyes, then glanced at Gwen. “Wanna go?”

            She shrugged. “Sure.”

Ethan lifted himself out of his armchair and crossed to the coat closet, grabbing his favorite leather jacket. “Somebody go wake up Espi; she’s been asleep since we got here.”

“Sure, gimme a bull horn,” Dakota giggled.

Gabe banged on one of the bedroom doors. “Espi, wake up! We’re going out.” He banged a few more times.

Espiranza stuck her head out the door. Her bright blond hair stuck up in random tufts, her clothes were wrinkled and she did not look pleased at having been woken up. “What the hell, G.?” She moaned.

            “We’re goin’ to the lot.”

“What do I wanna go to the lot for? I’m tired.”

“Ellinora’s gonna be there,” Gwen cut in.

Espi’s eyes lit up. “Elli’s coming?” Gwen nodded. “I’m in; lemme change m’pants.”

Dakota pulled on her blue Converse as Gwen laced up her combat boots. Ethan sighed three minutes later as they were still layering their eyelashes with eyeliner. “Why do girls take five freakin’ hours to get dressed?” he asked.

“Why do guys take five freakin’ seconds to pee?” Espi countered through the door.

            “Skill!”

Espi emerged from the bedroom, clad in dark red skinny cargo shorts, a white tank top and her black and white Vans.

“Somebody cleaned up for their future girlfriend,” Dakota teased.

“I dunno, D.,” Gwen said. “Gabe’s lookin’ pretty spiffy tonight.”

Gabe wore black skinny pants that hung loose on his equally as skinny frame, a green polo shirt, and his favorite black high-tops. Espi and Gabe looked each other over. “I look better,” they said together.
