Hamelin.

You've heard the name before, I wager.  There's a very famous story about the place.  A story of a pestilence on a town, the man who solved their problem, their greed, and the consequences of their selfish actions.

That story is mostly true, but you must hear the real tale.

In truth, Hamelin wasn't a town, but a kingdom, and the mayor wasn't a mayor, but the king.  The rats came and ate everything, as the story you've heard said, and the Pied Piper arrived to cure the plague.    He led the rats away and was not given payment.  This is where the two stories truly divide.  In the tale you've heard, he led every child away, effectively teaching the adults a lesson.

Only one child was actually taken:  the Princess of Hamelin.

The king was so distraught by the loss of his precious daughter that he passed away not long after, giving control of the kingdom to his son.  The son then sought after the Piper, hoping to get his sister back.

He didn't.

When the new king had his first child, a daughter, he hoped to appease the Piper's anger by naming his daughter "Piper".

And that, my friends, is where our story truly begins...
