Chapter 6 - My Fault

*Murphy's POV*

I wake up sitting on the floor. I look to my right and see Grey's missing. Did she leave? I don't know. I stand I look across the room at the crib. Yesterday's memories start to flood back and I feel myself start to panic. Quickly I walk out of the room and down the stairs.

As I walk past a window I see the hoard of eaters clawin' at the house and moanin'. I ignore them and head towards the kitchen. I freeze in place when my eyes land on a dried blood trail.

The little eater girl, where is she?

I carefully pull my crossbow off my back and follow the trail. I come to the back door and see it left wide open. I hear the eaters hungry moans as I step out the door. Scanning the yard I spot the body and slowly walk over to it.

The arms of the eater a tied over its head. As I look at the eater's face it morphs into Annabelle again. I blink and she disappears. I shake my head and notice a note lyin' on the eaters stomach.

I crouch down and read the note. Just as I finish readin' it I hear the engine of a car roar to life.

Someone has Grey!

I spring back up and run across the yard. I come to the fence that holds back the eaters and through the cracks I see a black pick up trunk pull away from the house. In the front passenger seat I see Grey. Her head rests limply against the window and a small trail of blood runs down her forehead. In the driver seat sits a man, His beady eyes glued on the road in front of him.

I watch the truck drive away and feel anger start to rise up inside me. An eater slams into the fence and I step back. I need to get outta here. I scan the fence looking of a trail free of eaters and find none. I run back into the house and look out a window only to have an eater's bloody hand slam into it.

The house is surrounded.

Grey, I need to save Grey.

I scan the house lookin' for somethin' that might help me escape. On the wall by the door I spot a hook with car keys on it. If there's keys there must be a car. I grab them and look out at the road. Next to the curb sits a rusty, navy-blue truck. I need to get to it, I need to get to Grey.

I take one deep breath then push the front door open and run. Eater hands grab at me as I pass. Their moans echo in my head as I reach the truck and unlock the door. As I climb into the driver seat an eater grabs my left leg. I kick its hand with my other leg until it lets go. It stumbles back for a moment and I quickly slam my door shut. I throw my crossbow in the passenger seat and start the truck up. As I shift it into drive eaters surround me and slam their bloody hands on the sides of the truck. I stomp on the gas and ram into eaters standin' in front of the truck. I hear their bones crack as the tires squish them.

I speed off in the direction I saw the black truck go leavin' the snappin' jaws of the eaters behind. They could be anywhere by now. Grey, I don't even know if she's alive, she looked so limp. Maybe she was knocked out, I don't know. I don't know how i'm going to find her, I have no way of contacting her.

I sigh and reach down to the radio knowing that it'll just play static. Radio's went dead maybe a week after shit went down. They said they'd hold out as long as they could, their long wasn't long. I shuffle through the stations with false hope only to catch a word. No, it wasn't a word, it was a name. I turn the station back and listen.

If only you knew how I truly felt about you Grey. My sweet Grey, I've always loved you from afar. But now I have you. Your mine, just like you always should have been. We can be together, you and me.

That man you were with today, he's happy your gone. You were like a parasite to him, that's how he saw you. He was going to ditch you anyway, I'm helping you Grey. You'd be on your own if I didn't save you. He's probably waking up right now and seeing that your gone. He'll be dancing with joy.

He pauses and I listen to the background noise. I hear birds chirpin' off in the distance and water runnin'. He must be near a stream. I turn the volume up and listen harder. I hear another voice speakin', a voice I recognize, Grey. I can't understand what she's sayin' but her voice tells me she's alive.

Sounds like you need to be taught another lesson Grey. You know I don't like being called names. I don't like hurting you either, but it seems it's the only way to teach you.

I hear the sound of something metal, a knife, followed my the echo of footsteps a crossed a paved floor. I hear Grey's voice again, it sounds panicky, like she's beggin'. I can't understand the man's voice anymore but I hear the screams. Grey's screams for help. Her screams ring in my ears as the station goes dead.

Grey, what's that bastard doin' to ya? Just hold on Grey, I'll find you.

I can't help to think it's my fault. I turn the radio off and drive faster. I try to remember where a stream runs in this area. I haven't been here in over a year when I was lookin' for a job. I had Annabelle with me and we were on our way home. The car broke down and we went lookin' for help. We wondered into the forest and soon came to a stream. We followed it and found a trailer park.

I have to find that stream again.

Don't worry Grey, I'm comin'.
