Joe knew how it felt to not be able to breath. It was engraved in his memory. He could close his eyes and almost feel the pain he felt that day when Patrick called him and told him what had happened.
"The doctors say he took an overdose."
He could hear Patrick had been crying from the way his voice sounded.
He could still remember breaking every speed law possible on his way to the hospital and somehow miraculously not getting pulled over.
He hadn't left Pete's side one single time until he woke up. But Pete didn't know that. Joe had asked Patrick and Andy not to mention it. Joe didn't need Pete to feel grateful. He would rather have died then left Pete's side anyhow.
Joe wondered if that was why he had aged so fast. All the fucking stress he had gone through in the old days worrying about Pete. It didn't matter anyhow. It's not like anyone cared the way he looked. Or that he wasn't a starry eyed wild teenager anymore. Or that he was constantly getting drunk on nights when he was alone. With all his thoughts and secrets he kept to himself, sometimes he wondered if he would explode. But maybe that was just his splitting hangover headache speaking.
