Waiting

Greninja stared sullenly out the window of the Pokemon Center at the rain that had just started to fall. It had been three hours since they had brought Ash to the Pokemon Center for help and they still had yet to receive any word on how he was doing. Absentmindedly, he tapped his webbed hand against the side of the couch he was sitting on, trying to make time pass faster.
"I hope Ash is all right," Lillie said worriedly.
"Me too," Pikachu echoed sadly, his ears drooping.
"Me three," Greninja added, quietly enough so that the others had to strain to hear him. Lillie smiled at him sympathetically.
"I'm sure he will be, though. Nurse Joy can fix anything," she said, with a confidence that seemed forced. "He'll be back on his feet in no time."
Greninja wasn't so sure if that was true. In all their time together, he had never seen his trainer looking so lifeless before. He was certain that if they'd arrived at the Pokemon Center just a few minutes later, Ash would have died.
The frog-ninja Pokemon shook his head; it was easier not to think about everything that could have gone wrong, especially when so much had gone wrong already.
"I just hope Nurse Joy lets us in soon," he muttered to himself. He was going stir crazy wondering what was going on with his trainer. Pikachu didn't seem to be doing much better either.
Another hour passed, and there was still no word on Ash. Greninja sighed and turned over onto his back, trying to see if the rain looked any more interesting upside-down. Much to his disappointment, it wasn't.
What could be taking so long? he wondered. Still, a voice in his head reminded him, it was probably a good sign that it was taking so long to tend to Ash. After all, if he was a lost cause, Nurse Joy would have come out by now.
One more hour went by. Lillie went to call her mother to check up on her. Pikachu joined Greninja in his new favorite hobby, rain watching.
"Do you think we'll be able to see him soon?" the yellow mouse Pokemon asked anxiously, glancing towards the room where Ash was being treated.
"I'm sure we will be," Greninja replied with more confidence than he felt. "They've been in there for over five hours now; how much longer could they possibly take?"
"I hope you're right," Pikachu sighed.
The rain continued to fall. Pitter-patter, pitter patter.
The rain continued to fall, and still Nurse Joy did not reappear.
The rain continued to fall, and Greninja could feel his heart beating in time with each drop.
The rain continued to fall, and he had never hated it so much in his life. Usually he loved the rain. But now, he would be happy if he never saw another raindrop again.
Ash hates the rain, Greninja thought dully. His trainer would not be pleased when he woke up.
He refused to let his mind replace the word "when" with "if".
The rain continued to fall, but at this point he was no longer paying it any mind. In fact, he wasn't paying attention to much of anything right now. He was just waiting to be allowed to go see Ash.
Finally, six hours after they had arrived, Nurse Joy finally reemerged. She looked tired, as though she had just finished running a mile, but she was smiling.
"I'm sorry for making you wait," she apologized. "You may all come in and see Ash now."
