Hallie and Monkey

Hallie saw a monkey,
Swinging upon a tree.
The monkey hated Hallie
And wanted to be let free.

Hallie said "Hello!"
To the creature there,
But the monkey did not like her.
Hallie did not care.

Hallie watched in awe
As the monkey waved to a bear.
Hallie thought it was funny
For Hallie loved to stare.

The monkey screamed and yelled,
Causing a commotion.
Hallie jumped and laughed,
"I can make the same motions!"

Hallie mimicked the monkey,
Making him more mad.
The monkey swung out a tree.
He had more anger than he thought he had.

He jumped onto Hallie,
Pulling her blonde braids.
"Get off me! Get off me!"
She screamed and waved.

Now Hallie's in the hospital.
She hasn't got a clue
As to why the monkey hit her
While she was in the zoo.

The monkey is no longer welcome,
At the Bronx Zoo,
For he can never come back,
No longer flinging poo.

The monkey is being put down.
He is scared as he can be.
He lays onto the table,
"I just want to be free."

There is a beautiful memorial,
For the poor boy.
He rests in pure silence,
And the zoo has named him Roy.

All the monkey wanted,
Was to be free.
Fortunately for him,
He's as happy as can be.

Laying in his grave,
So quietly,
Although he was a monkey,
He was just like you and me.

Millions come visit him,
Each and every day,
And every anniversary,
The children laugh and play.

There is a playground named,
After the little baboon.
Dozens of kids play there,
And there are "Roy" balloons.

He is very peaceful,
And happy as can be.
For he is swinging,
From every heavenly tree.

To the birds,
The bees,
And the apple blossom trees ,
Roy is content and is finally let be.
