Especially in fan fiction I see people who are very typical. Or when the writer makes a character's friend or significant other very similar to them.
Say the person you're writing about is very emo and you make their best friend or girlfriend/boyfriend emo as well, that's kind of boring. You now have two emo characters. Change it up a little! Make your characters totally cool and unique, different from each other.
I don't know why my example was emo but I hope you got my point. Not everyone needs to be the same!
