Carmilla's POV:
I waited outside the room as Laf said their goodbyes to Laura. It was beyond painful to watch but I somehow managed to convince them, along with Mr. Hollis, to let me be the final one. I figured the longer I stalled my goodbye the more time Laura had, though I didn't see what good it'd do since I had no idea if she was even here still..
I wish she could give me a sign. Something to let me know she was okay or at least still here. Anything..
"She can hear you still, you know."
I jump in my seat when I notice a newly formed figure sitting beside me. She wore black and had a pearly white smile.
"What?" I ask confused to the stranger.
The lady sighs sitting up in her seat.
"Laura. She's not exactly here but-"
"Wait, you're Mattie aren't you?"
"The one and only." She smiles proudly at me. "And I'm here for a short time to tell you, it may be time to move on."
"W-what." I gulp as my mouth runs dry from her words. She was only here to tell me Laura was gone?
"But you've seen Laura? Is she okay? Is she.." I pause trying to use the time I had with Mattie wisely. "Is she coming back?"
Mattie raises an amused eyebrow and stands now, watching the nurses rush through her like thin air.
"She's-" Mattie bites her bottom lip but smiles through it, "in a bit of pain-"
"Pain! Oh god, she's not going to make it is she-"
"Cool it child." Mattie says annoyed with my interrupting. "It's a stage I've seen many times before, usually not ending well, I'll admit.."
"Please, enough with the secrets. Tell me what's going on Mattie." I was desperate. If Laura needed more time I was ready to cause a scene, but if it was too late, I didn't know how I'd take it. A flash of sadness shows in Mattie's still eyes. She opens her mouth as if to speak but something holds her back. Her hands balled in fists as she whispers something to herself, at least I thought it was to herself. The tension in her shoulders suddenly relaxes and she releases her fists.
"They won't allow me to say anything more. I must go now." She sighs closing her eyes symbolizing she was ready to disappear.
"Wait!" A panicked tone comes from my voice causing Mattie to stop and open her eyes.
"Just.. tell her I love her.. and I'll be looking for her.. everyday." I held the stutter in my voice the best I could, "I'll look for her in the art around me.. in the waves of her favorite beach, in our library corner.." My voice cracks as tears form in my eyes blurring my vision. "I'll look for her.. every single day.. at the train station." The tears finally fall freely from my eyes.
Mattie looks tense again before nodding slowly and disappearing before me. Once she's gone I try to gather myself but can't help the sudden gasp and tears. I place my face in my hands and take deep breathes the best I can trying to remember Laura's words.
The door to Laura's room opens and a very broken Lafontaine comes out of the room. Their eyes bloodshot red and cheeks still slightly tear stained. They nod slowly to me holding the door open to show it was my turn.
