Weeks went by and I never stopped thinking of that night. I was back in my room before dawn and nothing was out of the norm. Nobody suspected a thing. My secret was safe and Jason did not flee from me. He loves me and I love him. Nothing could be more right in the world.
It was the night of the Autumn Ball that I sought him out. Though I have been receiving letters and small gifts, I had to meet him for the one reason that could endanger us both. I was dressed in my new formal uniform, thankful that it hides the bulge in my abdomen. He has to know, and I had to be the one to tell him.
Walking my rounds like on the night I first met him, it was not hard to locate him. He was with his fiancée. Of course, he wouldn’t renounce his marriage, it was simply not done. I walked up to him with my tray; this time was no different from the previous time except that Roxanne did not utter a single word.
I did not know what he saw in my eyes but he followed me out of the ballroom. Roxanne looked absolutely furious. She whipped around and stalked away, to where I do not know. Bringing him to the gardens, I prepared myself.
“Jason, I am with child.”
