I wonder why the darkness befriended me
The light I love - and it is easy to see.
But in the shadows, I began to discern
A pattern I wanted to learn.
Yet then we crossed in the street
And we were entangled in our feet.
Too long you'd walked your own road
Then we caught each other and time slowed.
I was unfamiliar, awkward and strange
You were just as much wanting a change.
As we found we were similarly askew
Something broke between us two
Who knew it would be broken, quick as a string
Like the clouds breaking the rain to bring.
How many words, and sleepless nights,
How many smiles and wondering flights,
We'd share all our seeing dreams.
And sobered if either of us heard the steam
Of the water, our hopes, scorched by life's fire
Haunted by the shadow of fear's spires.
You whispered where you will be
And it is all too distant from me.
The night is seeping into my skin,
Meet me when I finally sink in.
