A SIGH FELL from Jade's lips as she was once again paired with someone, who both she didn't want to work with and she was sure he didn't either. She glanced up at the clock and stared at it, almost willing it to go faster and was unimpressed when it didn't move much and Jade glared back at it as she slumped back in her seat, trying to focus back on her work but failing when all the words seemed to swim together, creating a blur.

She shifted in her seat, pain erupting from just below her ribs and a low hiss left Jade's lips. She should have gotten them checked out before she left but she had been in a rush and it hardly mattered much anyway as she had done everything they could have done herself, Jade had gotten quite good at stitching herself up at putting herself back together

It was somewhat of a survival thing

"Hi" A voice whispered next to her and she could've pretended she was too busy with work but then they both knew it would be a lie. She guessed that she would have to talk to him at some point, although she could hardly be bothered

Sparing a half glance at the boy next to her, she refrained from rolling her eyes. Knowing it would do her little good, he would just continue pestering her. No matter how much he seemed sucked into his work, blonde hair flopping over his forehead and over his eyes

Jade snatched her attention away from the boy who seemed to notice the fleeting attention she gave him and instead looked around the room. Everything was mundane, as it always was as  pens scratched against the paper, sometimes too hard which led to the inevitable hole as students wrote even faster than the ink could dry on the page in an effort to get work done so they didn't have work to do that night -- which most would pretend they never got and not do anything anyway

Hushed conversations filled the classroom when the teacher's back was turned. Pieces that float to Jade, who was almost invisible to the throng of high schoolers whom she shared eight periods a day with, gossiping, laughing and the talk about whose party they were all going to that weekend made their way back to Jade, who stored it away knowing that she might need it to survive one day

She leaned in closer to the boy with the annoyingly long hair, wincing slightly in pain as she hissed out in annoyance "What?"

The boy raised an eyebrow, green eyes sparkling with clear amusement at her annoyance and even though Jade was about to snap, he decided to push some more "I just wanted to ask you about this question"

"Seriously? I know you know the answer to it"

Her words were biting and curt, venom dripping from every other word and a smart person would decide now was the time to back off. The boy decided to double down, smirking in a way that made Jade's chest squeeze in ire as she stared  at him but he seemed unwavering in his desire to piss her off

"Well then maybe I just wanted to hear your voice" The blonde smiled, all charm and annoyance  "Or maybe I wanted to know how you're doing? I did hit you pretty hard last night in the ribs"

A wave of anger burned in her veins, something hot and primal. She wanted to stand up from her chair and slap that pretty little smirk on his face but she clenched her fist, trying to calm herself down but failing and so to deflect some of her anger, she shot back "Yeah and how's your eye?"

"Oh ha ha ha"

"Then stop being an idiot and focus on the work in front of you"

"But I don't wanna, that's boring" The boy pouted and Jade rolled her eyes. He was doing this to get a rise out of her, he was doing this to push every button he could think of and he was doing it because he found it amusing "Besides annoying you is way more fun"

"Tyler Jacobs, stop annoying Miss Smith and get on with your own work!"

At the teacher's warning, Tyler sank low in his seat and Jade smirked which Tyler noticed and he narrowed his green eyes in her direction which only made her smirk widen and when the teacher had turned back to his work, flip her the bird which had Jade choke back a laugh

The silence that currently descended on the duo made Jade nervous but she knew that Tyler didn't want to get in more trouble with the teacher and so she glanced up at the clock and stared at it, almost willing it to go faster and was unimpressed when it didn't move much and Jade glared back at it as she slumped back in her seat, trying to focus back on her work but failing when all the words seemed to swim together, creating a blur.

She didn't even know what they were supposed to be doing

Her mind wandered to a place far from the crumbling walls of the classroom. To somewhere that was even more desolate and decaying but to her that was home. She could smell the stench of sweat that no matter how many times she showered after leaving could never completely wash off the faint scent that clung to her like a second skin

Jade felt a hit in her upper abdomen and let out a grunt of pain as she looked over at Tyler, whose green eyes were boring into her own. He nodded down at the piece of paper that was still laid out in front of her -- blank. It hadn't been touched since the lesson began and Jade knew that while she didn't want to do the work. It was easier to do it now so that when she got home, she could do what needed to be done

The redhead's pen scratched against the paper -- really she needed a new one but she couldn't be bothered to buy one even if there was a stationary shop down the road from her house. Jade filled out the questions on the worksheet without really trying, not really caring if she got the answers right or wrong

She just needed it filled out so that at least she could say: She tried

Fate or whatever she believed in on that day seemed to have her back for once as the bell rang overhead starting a chain reaction of rustling papers, bags and chairs scraping across the floor and a rise in the noise level in the classroom

Jade once again sighed, two periods down, six to go
