Mike brushed the sand away from hos watch and double-checked; he had about three minutes before the tide started coming in, and he still hadn't found the treasure his sister Lacey had said was hidden in the cove.

He reviewed his options. He was tempted by the idea that he could sweep the area and make one last calculation about where the treasure might be stowed. Alternatively, he could abandon the bounty and get back to his parents' yacht before they noticed where he'd run off to. Since he was fifteen now, they trusted him to leave the boat whenever they docked at shore, but he always had strict time limits, and his hour was almost up. If he waited until the tide started in, he could get stuck by the cove, and then he wouldn't be able  to make it back.

Mom and Dad will be furious if I'm not back on time, he thought. He was so close to finding the treasure, though; he was sure of it. He and Lacey had ruled out four other hiding places, and this one was the last on their list. If I come back empty-handed, Lacey might not let me help with the next search.

Frowning, he reached into the sand and dragged his fingers around. I'll give it one more minute, and then I'm out of here. As soon as the last word formed in his mind, his fingers touched something cold, hard, and round. It was a gold piece! Mike turned on his heel and started running back to the yacht. As soon as I show this to Lacey, she'll help me convince Mom and Dad we need to stay on the island overnight.

There's treasure here for sure!
