roses in her ribcage

on a night so frail and fair, a small young woman drew back her hair.

her chin, it raised up to the sky.

her back held straight and withheld her cry.

she ignored the taunts, the names, the words.

said she felt no pain from the nerves.

how dare they?

what gave them the right?

she was no different, not in sight.

but deep within, she held a curse or so she thought.

a beauty like a rose that grew inside the ribcage of those feather-like bones.

the rose it grew and the thorns took hold,

protecting her from the world.

it would blossom and they all knew the power that would soon breakthrough.

she held her guard and this gave her time,

to feel the light igniting inside.

it was always there.

just stronger now and so for the first time, she put her foot down.

the stomp it sent a shock through the halls,

their mouths all spouted out in awe.

and so one by one,

they each stepped down.

confidence gone left with frowns.

she had the power all along

and for once her smile was true and strong.
