The Suicide Of Kiyoko Matsumoto
On February 12, 1933 a 21-year-old student from Jissen Girls College in Tokyo committed suicide by jumping into the crater of Mount Mihara, an active volcano on the island of Izu Ōshima, Japan. Kiyoko Matsumoto had developed an infatuation with fellow female student Masako Tomita.
Mount Mihara picked up the new name of “Suicide Point”. In 1933, a total of 944 people committed suicide by jumping into the same volcano. Even today, suicide in Japan remains a major social issue and the suicide rate is one of the highest in the whole world (not forgetting Aokigahara - The Suicide Forest which is also located in Japan). Despite the unusual method of suicide - Kiyoko is not the first to commit suicide this way.
