Mai shot up into an upright position, searching the soul-sucking room with bewilderment shaking through her body. Her back was dusted with musky blackness and her limbs throbbed with soreness. The darkness blind-folded her eyes as a handicap while her hands fumbled along the wall. Mai only encountered rough plaster as her hands trailed down the surface. Her cranium was beating like her bursting heart as panic sank into her stomach suffocatingly. Fear dissolved into her skin, abandoning the unsettling feeling that stabbed Mai fiercely when she'd first arrived. Footsteps began to echo through the floor.
Is it Naru?
Madness was leisurely controlling her body as if it owned her. Mai could feel her hope draining away painfully and frantically knocking on the barrier of her skull.
Will someone hear me?
Am I imagining the footsteps?
She dragged her feet and continued to pace, flicking her head to stop the loudness that reverberated within her. Mai's steps were forced and lethargic, her legs willing to collapse beneath her at any moment. She vocalized her thoughts that made no sense to her anymore while her warmth was dully sapped away from her.
It's dark.
~~~~~~
The crew beamed their flashlights into the darkness, creeping their way further into the dusty corridor. Apparitions were mythical at the time, but the air still seemed threatening.
"How did this get down here, wasn't Mai behind us?" Ayako stated out of the blue, the crew drawing their attention to the object in Ayako's palm.
The team exchanged looks and narrowed their eyes to scrutinize the familiar thing.
"Is that... Mai's shoe?" John drew back and widened his eyes, not able to believe the words that escaped his lips.
Their boss halted with a strikingly stiff back. He was unmoving. Suddenly, as if possessed, Naru whirled around animatedly, stealing the shoe from Ayako, "Impossible..."
The statements seeped in and the realization smashed into the crew like a freight train.
Naru shouted at his lung's full capacity, "Monk, John, go check for Mai in the base. Now!"
Monk and John departed at full speed, slamming their feet into the ground with every step. Naru knew she wouldn't be lounging in the base, smiling like she always does. However, he had to validate his own doubt that ate him from the inside.
John's expression of playfulness vanished and Monk's humor was nowhere to be found. They burst into the base that was now a lifeless room. They turned to each other, worried for the safety of their friend. They bounded into the hallway, discovering a mess consisting of Naru's tempature and video equipment; which they somehow missed in their frenzy. Monk shoved the shatter glass pieces of the camera towards the wall while John squatted on the ground.
John's eyes scanned over the array of equipment, his eyes halting at the sight of blood. A small pool of it to be precise.
"Look!" John exclaimed with his cracking voice.
"Let's report back to Naru..." Monk replied gloomily. Monk's body trembled and his eyes were shaded by his hair. He strode hastily towards the basement. John heaved his legs forward to keep up with Monk's briskness.
~~~~~~Naru barked orders at Masako and Ayako, who could only glare at his selfish instructions. Suddenly, Monk and John tripped into the room with a noisy, "umph". John pushed himself from Monk's back as Monk groaned from the uplift of weight that had rained upon him. Naru paced in front of the blank and tarnished wall. The knocks had not stopped and he doubted his ability to remain calm.
"Monk," Naru whispered with a strained voice, attempting to regain any drops of composure that swirled in his skull, "I want you and Lin to break down this wall."Monk began to argue with Naru's command, but he, of course, was ignored coldly.
"Mrs. Hara, I need you to try and speak with the spirit here," Naru's anger level rising again.
"He's so hopeless, he doesn't even realize his feelings for Mai," Ayako muttered to herself, disappointment clearly evident in her voice."Did you say something, Ayako," Monk asked, interested in the one part he heard, "I heard you say someone~ has feelings for Mai..." Monk pressed, trying to create humor in the devastating moment.
"Nevermind. I don't feel like explaining this to an idiot." she exhaled exasperatedly.
"Hey, who's an idiot?!" Monk said with explosive loudness that echoed across the walls."Shut up, stupid!" Ayako exclaimed, even nosier than the idiot before her.
"If you imbeciles are done with your lovers quarrel, we have my assistant to save," Naru snapped, scowling profusely and demon eyes bored into their own gaze. They wiggled in terror of his seriousness.
"S-sorry..."
