"A tutor!"

"Yes grandpa, a tutor," I replied, I had mentioned the tutoring program that j had been brought into by my homeroom teacher.

"Back in my day, we didn't have all the gadgets you use now: Apple watches, Computers, flat screen TVs. How could you need tutoring when you have all these resources? In my day, the teachers didn't give a damn about us as students!" He bellowed turning red.

"Back then, the world was still in black and white!" I retorted just as heatedly. He took a step towards me, turning redder. "You little—"

"Gramps, your blood pressure!" I reminded him. He took deep breaths and sang an old song and calmed down.

"I just need to go to Mr. Matthew's house for a few hours for the next month, I'll be fine." I said and left on my bike to the Matthew's.

*Knock Knock*

The door opened five minutes later by a young boy around 6, I guessed he was the little brother, Auggie.
"Riley's coming," he said then slammed the door in my face.

"Well then," I knocked again and it was opened by an older lady, who I presumed was Mrs. Matthews. " Hey, I'm Topanga, Riley's mom, she's coming soon."
I shook her hand and replied with a small smile, "Hi Mrs. Matthews, I'm Sarah." Nice and short, like I was taught.

Soon after Maya and Riley came out of what I could only assume was her bedroom. She sat down on the couch right next to me and Maya on the other side.
"Hi Stephanie" She started making me cringe. Ouch. She didn't even know my name. " It's Sarah, Riley, my name is Sarah Morgan." I said softly. She apologized and we soon started with Math problems.

"How about this, you read the problem and I answer the question" she nodded and Maya just stared at me, we weren't making eye contact, but I could feel her gaze staring deep into my soul.

30 minutes later and we were done, but the horror wasn't over, no it just began... English, language arts, world history, and more galore.

"Okay so now that the horror is over, tell me about yourself." Riley started as Maya walked into the room.

"There's nothing really that interesting about me," I trailed off lying. Maya smiled,"c'mon I'm sure that there is something interesting."
"Not really, I mean my parents left me when I was young, I live with my grandfather, and I'm an only child." I lied, I know it's wrong, but if I told them they would just judge me.

Maya places a hand over mine, "I know what it feels like to be abandoned. And if you ever need anything just come to us." I just nodded, they literally just met me, they can't make any real promises yet.
Riley comes in and starts talking about boys to change the subject, "So Sarah what do you think of the boys in our class?" I thought for a second and then realized, "I don't really talk to anyone in my class, I'm not very social." They just nod and talk about the new kid Lucas, who Riley thinks is hot and stuff.
After a while things do get awkward and I get up to leave. I don't know how much more I could take of these lessons. Riley calls out to me, I plaster a big smile on face and turn around, only to be hugged. I was so taken aback by it I didn't know how to feel about that. Eventually, I realized I was supposed to wrap my arms around her, too.
Even before my parents....left, they didn't hug me, not like this. I said goodbye to everyone and left at last. When she hugged me I felt a warm feeling inside, not like I was in love with her or something. I felt noticed, and in a good way, too. When I closed the door I smiled and walked away.
