Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do,
to keep in the same place.
If you want to get somewhere else,
you must run at least twice as fast as that!
-Lewis Carroll
Alessandra fell, but she wasn't scared. A strange sense of purpose took over her. She was ready. She saw a blur of lights and colors, and then nothing at all. She fell, and fell, and fell, until she could feel the ground nearer. When she hit it, she rolled as she was taught. She heard some crunches under her, but was too dizzy to try to make sense of what it was. She stood still, listening, but she could hear no other sound asides from her breathing. She was ready to immediately face a beast like the monster wolf or even the killer bubbles but she could see nothing.
Alessandra took in the place she had landed in. It was in fact a forest, and wherever she was, it was the middle of the night. Had she been falling for that long or was it simply a different time over here?
She had landed on some leaves and branches. She considered making a fire, but decided against it. Someone could see her, or something, since she could be anywhere. She remembered the monster wolf once again and shivered. She had to make sure it was safe first, at least explore a little.
She was hit with a wave of relief. She had at least survived the first part; going through the portal. Now, Alessandra stood up and started walking, ready to explore.
Since she arrived, she had been walking and walking, seeing only trees and small bushes, and finally, she got to a beach. She started to round it, but still hiding in the trees, just in case.
She hadn't heard anything since she got there either, just the sound of insects. Was there something dangerous hiding somewhere? Or was the Lab just paranoid?
She walked a few more minutes and sat down. She had suddenly become incredibly hungry, so she opened her bag. The fruits hadn't made it, obviously, but most of the seeds had. And the cereal bars. She closed the bag and looked for a bush. There was one close to her, with red little fruits. She took a few and waited for a small animal to come by. But none did. Alessandra simply decided to eat some nuts and seeds. But she was hungry still, and took the small fruits to smell them, to see if she could recognize the smell. She didn't.
Alessandra didn't exactly trust the method they had taught her back at the Lab, but she thought it was worth a try. She took one of her daggers to cut one of them in half, but never got the chance.
"I don't think that would be very wise", a voice said right behind her.
Her reflexes came in. She turned around ready to punch or dodge, taking the dagger and saw a boy sitting on a fallen tree trunk. He looked relaxed, and very dirty. His brown hair was messy, and looked darker than what Alessandra suspected it actually was. Maybe it wasn't even brown. It was cut short on the sides, and longer on the middle. His face was full of dirt smears, like he had tried to wipe them off with his hands but just made it worse. He wore a plain, dark, longed-sleeved shirt, a dark jacket, trousers, leather gloves and boots. He must've been the same age as her, about seventeen she guessed. Alessandra noticed he had a belt with his own dagger in it.
