Chapter Two.

Carl-

"Carl. Carl? Hey!"

I rolled over in the small bed and saw my dad standing at the door.

"Time to get up."

I decided to lay in bed for a little while longer.  Last night I had a dream. In my dream, none of this happened. The world was okay. My mom was still alive. Life was okay. Now it's just turned to absolute shit.

I sometimes wonder how my dad has held on for so long. He's the leader. A father. A friend. Everything that this group does, is up to him. It must be a lot of pressure knowing that you have to take care of so many people. And if they die, 70 percent of the blame goes to you.

I understand why he still treats me like a kid. I'm only fourteen, and I'm his kid. He's already lost so much. Judith and I are all he has left. As much as it annoys me, he is my dad. He wants to protect me.

Just as I was about to get up and get dressed, I heard unfamiliar voices.

"So how long have you two been alone?" My dad asked. Okay, theres one familiar voice. Who are the other two?

"Um, about a day and a half maybe?" A girls voice said.

I quickly threw on some clothes and walked out of my cell, acting like I heard nothing.

"Carl? Come say hello."

I looked up and saw an older boy, around Beth's age, and a girl. She looked about my age. She's pretty cute too.

The girl smiled at me. "I'm Brianna. This is my brother Josh."

"I'm Carl. How old are you? I'm fourteen."

"Nice to meet you! I'm the same age. Josh is seventeen."

I nodded and examined the girl. She had shoulder length hair. But it was blue. Not bright and vibrant. It was faded and her dark roots were beginning to come in. It was still pretty cool.

She had four peircings in each ear, and was wearing a black ripped Nirvana shirt. Over top of that she had a teal and black plaid button up shirt, with the sleeves rolled up. Her black jeans were dirty and ripped, and her work boots were all scuffed up.

She noticed me staring at her and she gave me a glare.

I guess that means it's time to stop checking her out.

Brianna-

Josh and I have been walking around for a long time. A day I assume. There's no place that looks good enough to be a possible shelter.

"Bri? We'll have to find a place soon. It's gonna be dark really soon." Josh informed me.

I nodded. I wonder where my mom is. Is she in Heaven? It's only been a day, but it feels like her death happened a few hours ago.

I miss her.

Now I have no mom. No mom to have girly talks with. No mom to tuck me into bed at night. No mom to say I love you to. She's gone.
