“We're in a moment now, I can't believe it how, one touch and suddenly I need you,” I sang completely unaware that people had entered the room. It was the end of lunch and I had come into the music room early to practice.

“If you're gonna push me then promise you'll break my fall,” I continued but immediately stopped when I heard clapping. I turned to see my whole music class watching me.

“Very good, Alexis,” my music teacher applauded. I blushed and looked down at the floor while walking over to my seat.

“Now we have a special guest here today who has agreed to talk to you about these auditions,” she told us before opening the classroom door. I grinned as my dad walked in and he raised his left eyebrow at me.

“I’m sure you all know who this is,” my teacher said before taking a seat at the side of the classroom.

“So who has questions they want me to answer?” Dad asked. I raised my hand.

“Lexi,” he pointed to me.

“Any tips for the first audition?”

“Yeah, don’t be afraid to show your full potential. This is your way in so show them all you’ve got. That way, you won’t have regrets.”

The class continued to ask him questions and he continued to give us tips for the rest of the double period lesson.

“Thank you for coming in, Mr Sykes,” the music teacher said and he replied with a ‘no problem’.

I left the school with him and we got into the car.

“I can’t wait for this audition tomorrow. I’m going to sing Breathe In, Breathe Out by Tich. I really hope I do well,” I rabbited on.

“You’re not going,” he told me and I frowned.

“Uh…excuse me?”

“You’re not auditioning for that girl band.”

“I think I am, Dad.”

“I’m your father and I say you’re not going.”

“Why not?” I asked annoyed.

“Because you don’t want to come into this world.”

“First of all, I’m already in it just by being your daughter. And secondly, you’re such a hypocrite.”

“Alexis Sykes, don’t talk to me like that,” he warned.

“You were talking about no regrets earlier so why aren’t you letting me do this?! It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity. You did it and you’ve done fine.”

He pulled up outside the house and we both got out of the car. I stormed up the steps to the house and unlocked the door before marching inside.

“Alexis, you have to understand that I’m only trying to protect you,” he told me.

“But you’re ruining my only chance, Dad!” I shouted with tears in my eyes as I started up the stairs.

“I love you and I want to make sure no one ever upsets you. But this world is so hurtful and I want to shield you from that.”

“And you can do because you’ll be by my side, right?” I asked as tears fell down my cheeks. I looked down at him from where I was stood at the top of the stairs. He sighed and ran his hands through his hair.

“I’m sorry,” he almost whispered, “you can go to the audition if I take you.”

“Breathe in, breathe out, like a drug I can't stop. Need you here, need you now cause you've got heart. Breathe in breathe out,” I sang while my dad listened.

“Take it up,” he told me.

“Baby, forever free falling, free falling.”

He gave me a thumbs up and I smiled. It was the morning of the audition and I was nervous but that thanks to my dad I was prepared.

“Now come on, let’s go,” he said and opened the front door. I left the house and the two of us got into the car.

It was a twenty minute drive to the destination of the auditions and when I got there the coach from Sylvia Young’s Theatre School had already arrived. Dad and I got out of the car and I rushed over to Lia who embraced me in a hug.

“Good luck,” I whispered before my dad pulled me inside the building. A friendly woman with a clipboard took my details before pointing me in the direction of another woman who gave me a label with a number on.

I was told to wait outside a large door with a group of other girls who were between thirteen and twenty one years old according to my dad. We were also told that we’d have to do an audition in the large room we were sat outside then if they liked us we’d have to do another audition in the auditorium. My dad had spoken to whoever was in charge and apparently he knew them so he would be allowed into the audition room with me.

I became more nervous with every girl whose number was called out. My dad squeezed my hand reassuringly which slightly settled my nerves.

“Sixty-seven,” the man called who had been reading out numbers all morning. I looked down at my label and read ‘67’. My heart skipped a beat as I nervously stood up. My dad and I followed the number man through a series of what I thought were pointless doors before we made it to the audition room. My dad sat at the desk with the three other adults in the room and I was directed to stand on the dot in the middle of the floor.

“Alexis Sykes, is it?” one of the people sat in front of me spoke and I nodded.

“Hi,” he smiled, “I’m Carlos Johnson. I’m holding these auditions. This is Una Garcia and Lee Rivera who will both be helping me throughout the process. Now if you’d like to perform a song for us we can see if you have what we’re looking for,” he explained and I nodded. The room fell silent and I cleared my throat.

“Woke up too late for the train, routine is always the same, another day in a life like any other,” I sang with as much emotion as I could.

When I finished the song I was breathing heavily. I recomposed myself and looked ahead at the four people in front of me. My dad was grinning while the other three were writing things down.

“Alexis,” Carlos finally spoke, “that was an excellent audition. You have a very interesting and powerful voice. You’ll know in about an hour if you’ve made it to the auditorium audition. Well done.”

My face lit up and I thanked them before leaving the room with my dad. Once we were safely outside the room he embraced me in a tight hug.

“Well done, Lexi,” he said and kissed my forehead.
