What is summer?

Walking down a beach
Chilling out with Mickey Mouse
Basking in the golden sunlight
Checking out Dinosaurs at Jurassic Park
Smiling with loved ones
Drinking some Butter beer at Hogwarts
This is what summer vacation should be
It's visiting theme parks
And going outdoors
Having fun is the only rule
Each memory more memorable than the last

Sleeping in
Drinking smoothies
Joking about past teachers
Maybe even a summer fling
Or watching a new movie or two
Perhaps a summer job might be fun
Summer vacation doesn't always have to mean you gotta travel, right?
Besides there's volunteering
And Band camp
And summer homework
So there probably isn't enough time for all the fun stuff, but hey isn't that what summer is for?
Doing the important stuff so that it doesn't have to be during school, where life is even busier?

Actually, summer is whatever you want to do and whatever you need to do
Summer shouldn't just be consumed by things you have to do
Nor should it be wasted away
Sure, that summer job could earn money, but I've got enough hours of volunteering
And it's not like I have to watch EVERY new movie, right?
Better to spend 2 hours on homework than a movie I probably wouldn't spend more than $1 on.

You see the pattern, though, as we get older?
The older we get, the less freedom we have during Summer
Sure, it's good to be busy
But it's seems as if during high school, they really only give you summer so that you have time to do the important stuff
You know, SAT preparation?
And summer reading?
And hundreds of hours of volunteering?
And dual credit courses so that you have room for MORE classes during the school year?
What happened to dressing up like a student at Hogwarts and visiting the Harry Potter theme park?
What happened to sun bathing?
What happened to being scared to death by the giant T-Rex at the Jurassic Park ride?
What happened hunting down each and every Disney character (especially Mickey Mouse) just to get a picture and an autograph?
For another time, I guess.
Maybe during college summer break, if of course, I have enough money from paying tuition

The point is
Everyone is growing up
But each generation seems to be getting less of a childhood
And more of an adulthood
