I let out one long and heavy breath as we watch the men shuffle around the shipping containers. This was going to be a shit storm. Looking across the stacks I see Milou laying in wait. Looking up into the neck of a crane I see the tiny spec that is Lucas. Sitting in a sniper's nest. I hear his voice in my ear.
"Twelve seconds." he says and Milou stands. I watch her in her heavy task force gear as she readies her assault rifle. She starts running.
"Cue hood." Lucas says and I smirk and jump down amongst the men.
"Heard there was a party- why wasn't I invited?" I call ready with my pistols.
They're about to shoot at me when Milou leaps down on two or three men. She shoots anyone with a gun on me. I do the same for her. The crate theses guys are protecting has a lot of weapons in it. It's in connection to a mob who's in connection to a politician who's paying these guys off and vise versa. It's an odd relationship. One I don't want to question. I just know it's wrong.
Milou puts people down. Its impressive. Lucas picks off a few people running our way. It's easy. I open up the crate and huff. Milou tosses me some bags and we steal a few things. Lucas in the meantime gets into the crane operating booth. Milou and I have cleared out by the time he attaches the crane to the container. He drops it in the river a certain way. Leaves it for the police. They apparently know what's going on. Sort of.
We get what we need. We leave back to Lucas's building. I don't stay long. They don't mind. They call when they have another lead.
"We're putting one last hit of pressure on these guys. They'll do the rest for us."
"You mean you're going to cause a war between this politician and his old mob lackeys?" I ask as I looked at Lucas with a tilted head.
"Call it assisted Karma." Milou says strolling in with some files.
"And as a perk- here." She hands me the file.
"This one you can take yourself. I know you've got a grudge against a certain clown- here's some info of someone who's helped him out shamelessly for a while." She says and I take it slowly. It's something I didn't need. But I take it anyway.
They make plans. It's a big hit. Take down a secondary drug distribution and manufacturing warehouse.
When it all starts. It goes to hell. It's not quite a trap but the information they'd been given was to outdated to be good. Lucas is trying to get us out. But he's left calling for help. A bullet hit my helmet and shatters part of it. Milou shoves me into another room so I'm not shot. The action comes at a cost, She's left to deal with the men coming at her. I'm left to deal with the ones in the room she's pushed me into.
She's thrown through the door. I'm trying to pick her up when I hear the gun click behind me.
"Step away." It demands.
I have no choice, I don't want her shot and I'm to venerable to make a move yet. So I let her go. When I move away she turns to maybe try and see how to help me. But she freezes. And for the first time I see fear in her in her eyes. She doesn't have a gun on her. She only has a knife. But she's not moving at all. The man is to far for me to grab but close enough to me to keep me still. And then something in her changes. Her eyes brighten up, her pupils constrict. The air feels like it freezes. And then she moves. I duck away from the gun because she's thrown her knife into the man's wrist. She severs his tendons, he won't be able to pull the trigger even if he wanted to. She kicks up a broken leg of a chair that's got a nice point on it. She spins and jams it into a man's neck as he comes through the door. Takes it out and throws it into my attacker's neck next.
I hear a gunshot, she staggers, but doesn't stop. She kills the man that fired the gun. I have to pull her back. I pull her through a window onto the roof. We're unprepared and land hard on the concrete. She has the wind knocked out of her. I pull her up and to another dropped off roof. Lucas is waiting there. This is our escape plan. He's to distracted by something about Milou to notice my face. He picks her up without hesitation. That's when I see her blood trail. We get to Lucas's car. I drive while he's in the back tearing her gear off, trying to find where the blood is coming from. She quiet, but she answers his questions.
We get to Luke's building and he hauls her into his apartment. Inside, I abandon my helmet. Lucas kicks me out into another room to let him work on his own. I shut my eyes, because it hurts. I set head against the door. When I hear her muffled scream I grimace and turn away. It's about 30 minutes before the door opens. When it does. Milou's standing there. She looks more than pissed. Her shoulder is bandages up. Lucas is calling after her for her to calm down. She walks up to me, and I wouldn't have been able to stop the punch that connects with my face even if I wanted to. She even uses her wounded side.
It bloodies up my nose and busts my lip. I stumble, but she takes me by my collar and holds me up and away from her.
"YOU BASTARD!!" She slams me against a wall, I feel my head hit it hard.
"YOU SELFISH BASTARD YOU SHOULD HAVE TOLD ME!" She growls.
"Milou-" I try to speak, say something, but she tosses me away.
"What?! What are you going to say Jason?! I'm sorry?! I was trying to protect you?! You should know that masks don't fucking work!!" She growls going to shove me.
"I was trying to HELP."
"You were being SELFISH." she roars.
"IT WAS TOO LATE I COULDN'T-"
"IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO COME CLEAN." She snaps back at me shoving me towards the door.
"But you've lost your fucking chance now! Get out." She orders.
"Milou-" Lucas stepps between up.
"Just- go- I'll walk you out." he says quietly guiding me out. I want to stay. I want to scream and shout.
I don't want it to be too late to say that I was sorry.
I don't want it to be too late to make her understand.
"Lucas you know that I-"
"Just shut up okay?" he says tired, looking at me, "If you knew her- god if you weren't the biggest fool in the world you might've seen it."
"I-"
"No- you had a lot of fucking chances to talk- I know what you're going to say. Now you're going to listen to me." He looks at me with a dead look in the eyes. It's spooky and it makes me quiet.
"Milou- being who and what she is- is not a typical person. You know that- she's told you things probably I don't even know. You know how strong she is and you know that when she has someone to push off of she's something you've never seen before. And you? You threw it all out the window- yeah you might say you care- you might say it was to protect her but you're not telling the whole truth. You're scared of her- you're scared of the way you look at her, the way she looks at you. So you keep your distance enough to taste something sweet but not go all in on the gamble." he steps back from me.
"Trust me you lose every time. And it's hard to come back to the table with something they want. Don't say you were going to tell her. Because you weren't." He says before shaking his head and leaving me downstairs. I hear him lock his apartment door behind him.
I hate him because he's right.
I hate myself because I hate how scared I am.
