Intro:

It's a cool September evening in the town of FallTide. School has been in for a month now and everyone in the high school is going to the annual homecoming. Everyone except two. Alec Stone and Luna Hale. Neither of these two know each other, but they have heard of one another. This is their story.

Chapter One:

" Darling, why aren't you going to homecoming?"

" I don't want to go mother. No one cares about those things unless you're popular or just wanting to participate to get in the yearbook."

" Luna, you should go." my mother says trying to persuade me.

" I'm going out tonight. Alone. By myself."

I slide on my jacket and grab my purse. If one doesn't want to go to a stupid school dance, that is one's decision.

" Be careful Luna. Please."

I ignore my mother as I head out into the cool evening.

I don't understand why every girl gets all excited about something like homecoming. You get dressed up in your nice dress, terrible, hurting shoes, and expensive jewelry just to go to a dance with some guy who probably won't even remember your name come the following Monday. This is why I don't go to things like homecoming. I head to my favorite coffee shop in the town called Miss Mary's Shop. Miss Mary is the most kindest person I know here in this town who doesn't dislike me. She also knows how I like my coffee which is another plus.

I enter the shop to see Miss Mary talking with the head chef and one other person sitting at the bar. As I sit down, Miss Mary is already getting my coffee ready.

" Why aren't you at homecoming?" she questions.

" Why should I be there?"

" Having fun silly girl. It's homecoming!"

" No thank you. I'll stick to my books and coffee, not some guy who doesn't like me." I reply.

" I like where you're coming from." the guy a few seats down says.

" Do you go to FallTide High?"

" Yes. I'm a senior." he tells me.

" So am I. How come I've never seen you around?"

" First, it's a big school and two just cause you've never seen me doesn't mean I haven't seen you. You turn down all the guys who walk past you, you're always in some book, and you let those people push you around."

" Hey, I didn't ask you to judge me." I say to him.

" Why do you let those people do that? Huh? Tell me. Are you scared? Are you weak? TELL ME!"

" I-I-I..."

" Save it. When you figure it out let me know."

He stands up and places a ten on the counter. Miss Mary gives him a look and he looks at me. She smiles and he nods his head before exiting the shop. Always being judged, even by people I don't even know.

" How much do I owe you?" I ask Miss Mary.

" Nothing sweetie. That kind gentlemen took care of you before he left."

I stare at her in shock. There is no way he paid for me.

" You should really see what lies beyond a person than their words. Actions speak louder."

I nod my head and stand up from the bar.

" Goodnight Miss Mary. You have a safe night."

" You too darling." she says before I exit the shop.

How is it that he would pay for my coffee, yet ask me why I do what I do? I let that thought lay in my back of my mind as I start walking home. It looks like the dance was a little boring for some because there are dressed up couples here and there. I see one of the guys who likes to push me around at school since I turned him down.

" Look who is out here at night all by themself."

" Leave me alone."

" Oh come on Luna, you know you want me." he says disgusting me.

I roll my eyes and continue on my way. Logan doesn't appreciate what I am doing and follows me.

" Why are you alone? No boyfriend? Oh yeah, that's right, you don't want any of us. Why? Are you too good for us? Are we not good enough for you?"

" Please leave me alone Logan. You should get back to your date." I say.

Instead of walking away or saying something back, he pulls me into an alley and pushes me against the wall hard.

" You know you want me. Don't fight it Luna." he whispers in my ear.

" Let me go."

" Not until you say you'll be my girlfriend."

" No. Not ever in a million years." I reply as he puts his hand on my neck.

" You're making a huge mistake baby. I always get my way."

Suddenly, I am dropped to the ground as someone starts beating Logan up. I am too scared and confused to try and run away.

" Get away from her. Stay away from her. Don't ever look at her again." the voice says. A voice I know.

Logan gets up and runs away avoiding eye contact with me. The figure turns around and looks at me. It's the guy from the shop. He comes towards me and I look away from him.

" I'm not going to hurt you. Let me help you up."

He carefully and slowly gets me up. I avoid eye contact for I know what he'll say.

" Are you hurt? Did he hurt you?" he asks me.

" N-no. He j-just tried t-to s-strangle me I g-guess."

" Let me see."

He moves my head back and looks at my throat briefly before letting me go. My eyes meet his and I start to cry.

" Please, don't cry. You are alright. Let's get you home."

He takes my arm in his and leads me out of the alley.
