"Sonia! Sonia, wake up," I heard a voice say as I was slowly waking up from a dream.
All I could manage was a tired groan as my eyes fluttered open and I looked at the person who was waking me up. A little girl who had bright green eyes and long brown hair. It was Mari, one of the younger kids that shared a room with me.
"You were talking in your sleep again, silly," Mari giggled.
"I-I was," I asked in a clearly tired voice. I had that dream again. Being whisked away as a baby and forced to live my life away from someone who loved me. I still couldn't figure out what the dream meant or why I was having it. It was the fourth time that month, too. Something about it must mean something about my past life, before I was sent to this stupid adoption center in the middle of town.
"Yeah, but its fine," Mari smiled as we saw another little girl run in. It was Bailey, a girl who shared a room with some of the boys and girls. She seemed to be out of breath and very excited about something.
"Guys! Hurry downstairs," she said between breaths. "It's almost 7:00!"
I looked over at the clock to see she was right. It was 6:58 a.m., two minutes before our favorite shows came on. I jumped out of bed, fixed my pajamas, and ran out of the room with Bailey and Mari following close behind me. We managed to make it down just in time to see the previous show ending and the promotions for the next show beginning. Then the clock read seven o'clock. It was time to watch the Wacky Races.
"And now, here they are! The most daredevil group of daffy drivers to ever whirl their wheels in the Wacky Races, competing for the title of the 'World's Wackiest Racer'!"
The girls and I watched the show every morning. We'd get up before everyone else in the house just to watch the races. As we continued watching, we started to share a favorite racer. The beautiful Penelope Pitstop at number five. She drove a stellar pink car known as the "Compact Pussycat". Bailey and Mari thought the car was the coolest, but I always seemed to like Penelope more.
"Do you think Penelope will win this one," Bailey asked as the race was about to start.
"I sure hope so! A win for her at a time like this would be amazing," Mari answered. "She's had a rough few races, so it's time to bounce back."
"You never know. Penelope could be just warming up for a big surprise," I explained as the race started. Poor girls forget that the show was taped years ago. The half hour long race went on as our eyes were glued to the TV set in the living room. During a commercial break, however, we saw an ad that really caught our attention.
"Hey Kids! Wanna see an actual Wacky Race live? Meet racers like the Gruesome Twosome, the Ant Hill Mob, the lovely Penelope Pitstop, or even Dick Dastardly and Muttley? The come on out to the first ever 'Wacky Races: Showing of the Stars'! All kids will be entered into a drawing where the winners get to ride with their favorite Wacky Racer in the race! So come join us this Saturday, April 14th at the world famous Debbuton Race Track for an exciting day of Wacky Racing!"
After hearing where they would be, it didn't take long for both Mari and Bailey to scream at the top of their lungs, "The Debbuton Race Track?!"
I was a little shocked myself. The Debbuton Race Track was a mere 20 minute drive from the adoption center. Not only was the center not too far from the racetrack, Saturday would be my birthday. At least that's what Mrs. Peterson, the caretaker of the adoption center, says when the day comes. A chance to see a Wacky Race and meet Penelope Pitstop would be the best birthday gift ever!
