"No. I'm sorry, but no. It's not happening," Alec said the words to his mother even though he knew it was futile. Once her mind was made up, Alec definitely wasn't going to be able to change it.

"Not fucking happening. You can give me that stern look all you want, I'm not doing it," Cassia spoke the words to her father, knowing she didn't actually have a choice.

Two weeks later, Cassia Stephens and Alec Lightwood were wed. Cassia wore a plain white dress that had been her mother's and Alec wore a black tuxedo that looked like it might be a size too small for his tall frame. They went through the whole over-the-top shadowhunter ceremony, both doing their best to keep smiles on their faces and act like maybe they weren't miserable.

In reality, they were. Neither Alec nor Cassia were happy about being married to the other; it had only happened because their parents wanted the shadowhunter families to look united and strong for the Clave, which was basically shadowhunter government.

Not only were they not in love, they practically hated each other. They'd known each other since childhood and had never agreed on a single thing once. They were complete opposites; she was wild and reckless and didn't care what anyone thought where he was cool and calculated and stuck to the rules like he'd quite literally die if he didn't.

They had no idea why their parents had picked the other; all of the shadowhunter families had children that would've worked just fine for either of them and the marriages still would've served the same purpose. Both of them had to wonder if there were deeper reasons behind the pairing, but it didn't matter. Both would've done absolutely anything for their parents and their people, and apparently marrying someone they didn't particularly like was the ultimate "anything".
