"It's okay, you're safe now." The man said, presumably crouching down next to the younger boy, who trembled in the chair. His whole body ached, he just wanted it to be over.

"Why should I trust you?" He asked, shying away from the man's hand, which had brushed his leg.

He let out a low chuckle, shifting around to pull something out of his pocket. "Here, can't you see? I'm part of the child protection agency, we've got you safe now. No need to worry."

He stayed silent for a moment, before whispering, almost inaudible. The man frowned, and said, "Speak up son, I can't hear you."

"I said..." The boy repeated, voice still a whisper, "I'm blind. How should I know to trust you?"

After his parents died, Aaron was left with no one but his kidnappers to grow up with. He was nearly pulled into death as a six year old starving, beaten, hopeless boy who had seen only darkness for years, blind after a particularly savage beating.

Now, ten years later, he is pulled back into society with only a strange, thrill-seeking roommate to lead him through his new life at a boarding school.
