as dodie wanders back to the apartment, she takes a halt every now and then to watch the different colourful flowers and to take in unfamiliar scents. occasionally one of the neighbours greets her and she stands to greet them back and makes some small talk with them, feeling like everyone is really nice to her today.
because the sun kisses her skin and her dark hair has heated up, she pulls the elastic from around her wrist and fixates her hair in a high and bouncy bun on top of her head.
when she finally stands in front of the apartment door, she fishes out the key she grabbed before leaving earlier and lets herself in.
she closes the door behind her and dumps the two grocery-filled bags on one of the counters in the kitchen, where she is greeted by bertie who is yawning very loudly as he stretches his arms into the air.
"good morning!" dodie smiles.
"morning." he says back groggily after making some indescribable sounds and a few other mumbled "mornings" ring out weakly from the couch in the living room.
"how come all of you are so tired?" dodie wonders quietly.
"how come you aren't?" sammy retaliates in a voice that is higher than usual and she shrugs.
"i went out and bought some things for brekkie." she says, patting and stroking the bags, which makes bertie chuckle, "does someone want to help me unpack and cook?" multiple heads perk up from the other side of the counter dodie stands behind so that she can finally see the tired faces of her friends, their eyes still closed.
"nah." evan says as his head sinks down again but sammy lifts himself up from the couch laboriously.
"i'll help!" he says and dodie hears his stomach growl, which causes both of them to laugh lightly.
the two of them get pans and every other kitchen supply out that they will need and start to cook which results in delicious smells floating around the flat. soon, they are joined by the others who jump onto the bar stools at the kitchen island and dig in whilst sammy and dodie fix themselves a plate.
over them having breakfast, sammy and bertie fill them in concerning their plans.
"we'll give you the scripts in a second," sammy says, after swallowing a bit of scrambled egg.
"we still have to find someone for that other role though." bertie explains, "and have to make plans for the locations et cetera." sammy nods.
"also, i think we should plan some things we want to do ahead so that we can schedule them around savannah and i working and stuff." evan suggests and all of the others agree.
"right," savannah says, "so what's on our bucket list for the next five weeks?"
they discuss multiple things they could do and schedule days solely for filming and some for visiting local attractions and road trips to other cities, when they are done with that, dodie checks her phone and sees that she missed multiple calls from an unknown number.
she tells her friends and decides to call back, leaving the room so that she could talk to whoever had called in quiet.
"hello? here is dorothy clark, you called me multiple times?" she says, as politely as she can.
"hello miss clark, here is the little rock record shop! how are you today?"
"good? thanks and you?" dodie answers, confused as to why a random record shop would call her.
"thank you." the young man at the other end of the line says, "the reason for our call is that, one of your friends, evan, has informed us that you are going to be here for a few weeks and sent us a few clips of you singing that were cursing around the world wide web and we wanted to ask you if you would like to perform on our small stage in a few weeks time?"
dodie is perplexed, how did evan know about the few videos she has uploaded to youtube to unwind from all the stress she had had back in england? did the others know as well? she couldn't say yes, could she? what if this person at the other end of the line was just scamming her?
but before she could think any more about it, she found herself blurting out, "yes!" and getting that warm tingly feeling in her chest that normally only appeared when she makes or listens to music.
they arrange a date and she thanks the man after trying to recall his name but realises that he didn't tell her.
"so, i will be asking for mr.?-"
"sorry- you can call me thomas. you just ask for me on that date and i will set up the things with you on the stage, the shop owner will be there, too- i am just following his orders, so.."
"okay! i am really excited! thank you, thomas!"
"have a nice day, dorothy!" thomas says before hanging up and dodie stands in the silent room for a few more minutes, letting everything sink in.
she slowly opens the door and collectedly walks back to the kitchen where everyone looks at her.
"so who was it?" evan asks, smiling.
"you!" dodie screams, "how did you find out about- how? when did you call the-? what?!??"
he giggles as the others exchange knowing glances, obviously having been filled in with his plans.
"so when's the gig?" bertie asks, a wide grin on his face. dodie moves to his side and playfully slaps his arm a few more times. a few silent minutes pass.
"alright if you all would rather discuss each other's love life- i am curious! any news?" evan grins and looks at dodie sheepishly. she notices someone else's eyes on her as well which is why she just looks at her feet.
she opens her mouth, about to answer when evan speaks up again, "wait a minute-
what did one boat say to the other? 'are you up for a little row-mance?'"
whilst evan chuckles at his own pun, bertie claps slowly to mock him.
"oh, evan, how terribly i missed your puns." dodie smiles and tilts her head in his direction.
"there's nothing much going on with my love life to be honest, maybe i will find someone though, who knows?"
"did you spot anyone cute in the outside world this morning?" bertie wiggles his eyebrows and dodie rolls her eyes.
"and?" sammy insits for her to answer.
"i saw some beautiful girls and there was one boy who talked to me about bees. are you content now?"
"oh!" evan smirks, "we're going to find you that american boy, do you know what his name was? tell me everything!"
"nah." dodie grins, vengeful, repeating evan's words when she had asked for help with making breakfast.
