Pretenders

We grew up
Playing pretend
Seeing things that weren't really there
And with not a single worry,
Tasting the night time summer breeze.
As fall turns to winter and winter turns to spring
The changes toy with our bodies
And drag us down, deeper into our little game
Of pretend.
We never expected answers to our questions,
And neither do we now
Because we know there are none.
Let's tell ourselves to simply give up
And help keep up the facade
For our own safety.
"For those dreams to become reality, is a truly dangerous thing"
I keep feeding myself that spoon that nobody else seems to use
Hoping that someone will come along someday
And throw it in the garbage.
Even if the leaves turn green,
Or if a person achieves a long awaited dream,
Or if someone finally steps foot on Mars,
There will always be something worth pretending for.
So play,
Play with me
In this fake game of life
Where we do nothing but imagine and hope
And no matter how many years in the future
People say that everything imaginable was achieved by us
We are and will continue to be
Pretenders.
