Morty was lounging happily in a patch of warm sunlight, stretching and rolling onto his back. He looked like a fat cat.
Rick leaned down and rubbed his Morty's belly, the boy giving a small hum in response. "Y-Y-You're adorable, ya know that?"
"Mmhmm." Morty rolled over again and Rick scratched his back for a minute, stopping when a bright green portal opened in his living room and a Rick stepped out.
The Rick, who must have lost his lab coat at some point, looked around with his brow furrowed. "Uhg. Wrong place again." A Morty looked out from behind him, head tilted up and to the right.
Rick was confused as to why this Morty stood like that until the boy moved his head to the opposite position, down and to the left, but his eyes stayed frozen. The poor boy was severely wall eyed.
The coatless Rick glanced down at Rick's pudgy Morty and scowled. "What did you feed that thing?"
"I don't feed him anything. He gets it himself."
Coatless just shrugged, obviously not caring. His Morty tried to walk forward, but his ridiculously separated points of view caused him to bump into Coatless's legs. The Rick hissed and smacked the boy in the back of the head, the blow doing nothing for his bad sight.
Rick narrowed his eyes. He didn't like it when Ricks hit their Mortys.
His Morty raised his head lazily, gathering up enough energy to shift behind Rick, away from Coatless's sight.
Coatless glanced at Rick's Morty again. "Why don't you trade that for one that works?"
Yep. That was it. The final straw had just went up in flames. Rick stood, growling low in his throat. "He's not a piece of equipment to be scrapped and replaced."
Coatless's thoughts were plain on his face. Oh. One of those Ricks. He scowled, fiddling with the dials on his portal gun for a second before shooting a portal open and grabbing his Morty by the collar of his shirt.
Unprepared for the sudden yank, the Morty choked and scrambled backwards with the pull, whimpering. Rick growled again, stepping forward and crabbing Coatless by the wrist. He twisted the other Rick's arm until his hand released the Morty's shirt.
He stood close enough to the other Rick to see the delicate lines of the muscle of his iris. "Just get another one," he growled, shoving Coatless backwards, through the portal. It shut behind him.
The Morty that was left behind was frantically moving his head one way and then the other, trying to see what was happening.
"Come here sweetie." Rick went down on one knee and gently pulled the Morty closer. With a harsh rip, he tore the sleeve of his lab coat off and wrapped it around the Morty's head, covering one eye.
Head tipped up, pupil dilated with panic, the Morty focused on him. Rick gently rubbed the boy's hair. "Is that better?"
Head tilted, looking around, the Morty's breathing slowed to normal and he gave a tiny nod. "Is m-my Rick coming back...?"
"Sweetie..." Rick pulled the Morty close. "He doesn't want you. He-He-He thinks you're broken." The Morty, who Rick had decided to name Derpy, hugged him back, small hands fisted in his coat. "I'm your Rick now, okay? I'll take care of you."
Derpy sniffed and nodded. "O-Okay... Am I broken?"
"No baby. You're absolutely perfect."
