Chapter 2

Mack pulled up and the valet opened his door. He got out of the hired town car in front of the Motel where he was meant to be meeting his new client. The building was an elegant eye sore. It was the sort of place he had remembered his ex-wife would harass him to take her. She always wanted to have money or make others believe that she had it. He could never afford to bring her to a place like this even for a drink at the bar. Now she was married to a lawyer Mack knew she went out to nicer places than he ever took her. But he knew that even the lawyer husband didn’t get paid enough to bring her here.

Making his way through the front doors and the lobby, Mack tried to act like he belonged among these rich people. His black tailored suit had set him back almost $2,000 but it was an investment he needed to make when he started this job. The restaurants he normally dined in were high class, and the ladies that paid him to dine with them were even higher class. He had no choice but to look the part, even though he was never comfortable doing it.

Pulling the Key card out of his jacket pocket as he approached the elevators, a man that looked like he belonged in the CIA stepped up next to him. When they got into the elevator Mack waited for the man to press the button to the floor he was going to but the man did nothing. He just stood and faced the now close doors.

Mac pressed the button for the penthouse suite and swiped his key card. He didn’t know what else to do and hoped the guy next to him wasn’t up to no good, that wouldn’t be a great start to his night. The elevator moved up smoothly and rapidly, the light ding as the doors opened showed that it wasn’t a suite but what looked like another lobby.

Two more men, dressed the same as the one next to him, stood tall and still on either side of a door. He stepped out of the elevator and tugged on the collar of his white dress shirt. The dam thing felt like it was strangling him. What he would give to be able to undo the stupid tie and top button. These men made him nervous. Who needs what looks to be 3 bodyguards?

Clearing his suddenly dry throat and swallowing he held up his key card and ID to the two men at the door.

“I believe I’m meant to picking up my umm date from here?” he could have kicked himself when his voice come out unsure and hesitant. He was starting to think that Madam Louise was right and this wasn’t for him.

One of the men pointed to the door lock where the key was meant to go on the wall opposite them. Mack took that as his queue to try it. His movements slow and his hand much to his embarrassment shook. It took 2 goes before the lock released and he could open the door. He could swear the two guys next to the door were trying not to laugh at him. Again this did nothing to help his now highly strung nerves.

The first thing he noticed when he walked through and let the door close behind him was a man leaning over a dining table dressed the same as the other 3 CIA looking men right outside the door. Across from him on the other side of the table was a young woman. They looked like they were looking over paper work. She glanced up at him and reached for the man’s arm and checked his wrist watch. Other than that neither of them acknowledged him.

As they spoke in low voices that he couldn’t make out, Mack didn’t know what to think of this woman. She had to be early twenties at least 10 years younger than him. Her dark blonde hair was pulled into a lazy bun on the top of her head. All she wore was a royal purple silk robe that stopped mid-thigh. Her legs looked smooth and pale. Her feet bare as she stood on the front part of them as she continued to lean over the table.

Surely this couldn’t be her, the client he was meant to spend the night with. If it was then she was the youngest client he had ever come across and by far the most beautiful with her innocent looks. From what he saw when she had glanced his way she was flawless and his heart raced.

Mack continued to stand where he was and wait. Hell he didn’t know what to do now, he felt completely out of his element. He was starting to wonder if the guy she was talking to was going to join them. He hoped not, he wanted her just for himself, but if he was a part of the night that this client had installed for him, then Mack would just accept it and go with it. She was the one paying him after all. That meant she called the shots

He watched the man step back from the table and walk down a hallway. He pulled his attention back to the woman in the room with him. She still stood by the table, pen in hand, writing. Mack tried to restrain from fidgeting, he tried to keep his cool but was starting to get a little pissed off that he hadn’t been acknowledged and was left to just stand by the door.

The man returned and took some papers from her. They started to move his way and Mack heard her voice for the first time. “Make sure the car is down stairs by 7 in the morning Scott”. For a woman so young she sounded and radiated confidence.

She stopped about 4 feet in front of him and the man met his eyes. A steel look he received from this man who had been called Scott. Mac didn’t let it faze him too much. Being ex military himself, Mack had balls and a back bone that even the hardest stares did little to him, when he had control over his nerves. The man Scott spoke “The car will be here at 7 Miss, enjoy your evening.” His shoulder bumped Mack as he passed and exited through the door.

They were alone and Mack took in all her features. Dark blonde hair, eyes that he couldn’t tell what colour they were from this distance. Long black lashes, other than that her face was free of makeup. Her nose was straight and dainty, her bottom lip fuller than the top.

Mack watched her watching him. He knew she was taking him in. His dark brown hair and light brown eyes. More than likely the fact that his nose was slightly bent from when he broke it playing football one summer with his mates.

Her eyes lazily wandered over his face and yet she still didn’t talk. He watched them go to his jaw looking at the short dark hair that covered it. His other clients told him it made him look ruggedly handsome. Her eyes continued down over his body, still he couldn’t tell what she thought of him. His 6’2 frame, the broad shoulders that other woman loved to touch.

When she finally finished her inspection of him, her eyes returned to him, and she finally spoke directly to him.

“What’s your name?” her voice was soft but held that confidence she exuded before.

He cleared his throat, he knew she already knew that but it was the ice breaker.

“Mack” he responded in his deep voice

She cocked an eyebrow and tilted her head slightly.

“Mack, is the name your mother gave you?”

He clenched his jaw, nobody but his b!tch ex-wife called him by his real name and she only did it to p!ss him off.

“Mackenzie John Peterson Ma’am” it came out through clenched teeth.

“Mackenzie” the way she said his name made some of the tension leave his body.

“I like Mackenzie better than Mack” her voice sincere as she held his eyes.

Lifting a file that was in her hand she started to read through it.

“Age 32, weight 120kg, height 6’2, Brown Hair and Eyes, ex-military 6 year service, 2 overseas tours, divorced legally for 29 months, 4 year old daughter to said ex-wife, you work construction by day and live at City lights trailer park. I have your social security number, bank account details and last tax return. I’m also happy to tell you Mackenzie that your health check came back clean, no sexual diseases for you.”

She looked up and smiled at him. Mack stood there not knowing what to say. He should be pissed that she knew this stuff but he also knew that she was letting him know how powerful she was. That she could make his life difficult, with a flick of her fingers.

“My name is Maggie, Do you understand why you’re here Mackenzie?”
